- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2015I really like this book. I purchased it to teach a home school co-op class. I have gone through the book and appreciate the attention to every aspect of learning crochet. I also like the projects in the book, because they are simple, but cute. The projects are definitely items that kids would like to learn to make. I would recommend this book to anyone, young or old, who would like to learn to crochet. It is written in a friendly, easy-to-understand manner. The book includes both UK & US terms, which is a big plus!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2014I bought this to teach my 5 year old daughter how to crochet. I am an expert crocheter and knitter and was looking for a book that would help my little one visually since she cannot read yet. I read the reviews before buying this book and noticed one comment made about the UK stitch names being used and no US stitch terms. Both stitch names are present and explained clearly, so I do not agree with that reviewer. But, there are some rather misleading images in this book -- such as in the directions on how to seam two pieces of crochet, the images used are of knitted items, so beware.
pros:
- simple, cute projects a child might enjoy making.
- clear images showing how to make the stitch.
- both UK and US stitch terms -- I see this as a plus because some of the really difficult crochet patterns out there may be using UK terms, so I think starting early is a good thing.
cons:
- the use of knitted items to show how to piece crochet items -- publisher, please fix this!
- not as extensive a list of items for kids to make
I would have liked to see a gallery of suggested crocheted items, a way for kids to be inspired to combine stitches, even if they are newbies to crochet.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024The directions are quite easy to follow. It was a birthday gift for my 10 old granddaughter. I used d the directions and made a bracelet for her in less than an hour and I’m a beginner too! She’s very excited to learn how to crochet with it. I’m going to g buy another one! Highly recommended
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2024Great book, easy to follow for a beginner. Great value for money
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2014The beginning of this book has good step by step instructions on the 3 most basic stitches. Note - the terms are in English language - US vs. English call the same stitch different names, so that tripped me up a little as someone just learning crochet. I bought another book at the same time, and THAT book covered BOTH US and English - so I had an "Ah Ha" moment when I realized that the single crochet is called the Double crochet in English crochet.
There are projects in this book, but for the beginner - which is who I would imagine this book is geared toward - the instructions are a little confusing. If I hadn't taken a class already and knew some of the US terminology, this may not have been so confusing. This book did not cover the basics of crochet - hook size, other tools, variation between different methods. Over all an OK book for learning 3 basic stitches.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2020Loved this book. It's very easy to understand. It helped both my 7 and 10 year old grasp crocheting really quickly. I'm even learning to finally read patterns so that I can make stuff instead of just eyeballing it like I've always done. Simple enough, great pictures. 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for children and their parents!
Fantastic little book! The instructions are very clear thanks to the use of drawings instead of pictures. The projects build up in difficulty very gently and the book really is well designed to build confidence rather than jumping into long or difficult projects. Would recommend it to any beginner, not just children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great idea if you are looking for something that is not only productive but environmental.
Bought this along with the similar knitting book. Both are really straightforward and simple, but if you are buying them for children (as I did for my 11 year old granddaughter), they will need some help to get started. Great gift idea that is environmental as well.
