There is no battery inside the clock. It requires 1*AA dry batteries, carbon batteries are recommended over alkaline batteries.
How do I turn on the alarm?

Move the switch on the back from the "OFF" position to the "ON" position.
Why are alarm clocks not suitable for alkaline batteries?

Because the movement is a high-precision instrument and consumes little power, the use of alkaline batteries will easily damage the movement and lead to inaccurate timekeeping.

This clock actually blew away my expectations. It looks EXPENSIVE. I have it sitting on my entry way table as I don't have room for a wall clock and with kids you have to always know the time. I thought this little table clock would be great and instead of cluttering up the table gives it a very European/ traditional element to our entryway table. I couldn't' be happier. It does take 1 AA battery and does have an alarm which we don't use. It is also absolutely SILENT! you do not hear any ticking at all.

Looks great, keeps great time.

The alarm can be annoying: you need to wait until after the "hour slot" where you want it and then set it for the next day. In other words, if you want to wake at 8:30 tomorrow morning, you need to wait until after 9:00pm the night before to set the alarm, otherwise the alarm will sound. If you want to wake at 7:00am, then wait until after 8:00pm the night before to set it. (If you wait until 7:05pm the night before or anytime before 8:00pm, the alarm will sound.) So it's not ideal for an alarm clock but does work.

My other quibble is that it's unstable, so you might want to have it leaning against a wall or book.

But it's a great looking clock and seems high quality for the price.
