Alexander McQueen: Inside the Creative Mind of a Legendary Fashion Designer Hardcover – Illustrated, May 5, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
A true comprehensive study, this volume is the first in-depth look at McQueen and explores key themes of the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition—tailoring, gothic, primitivism, naturalism, and futurism.
Curated by London College of Fashion lecturer Claire Wilcox, the book also features previously unseen material as well as groundbreaking essays and feature spreads by multiple authors and leading fashion commentators.
This kaleidoscopic approach explores themes central to the designer’s work and his collections:
* The psychology of fashion
* Natural history
* The theater and spectacle of his shows
* His key creative collaborators
* And much more
Alexander McQueen also offers an encyclopedic survey of McQueen’s catwalk collections, illustrated with striking images by leading fashion photographers and specially commissioned photographs that capture the breathtaking skill of his designs and awesome theatricality of his shows.
More than a coffee table book, this is a representation of one man’s genius, a genius that left the world of fashion all too soon.
For anyone who loved and admired Alexander McQueen and his work, for anyone with a passion for British style, and for those who want to better understand McQueen’s place in the history of fashion, this is a one-of-a-kind illustrated treasure.
“He brought a uniquely British sense of daring and aesthetic fearlessness to the global stage of fashion. In such a short career, Alexander McQueen’s influence was astonishing—from street style, to music culture and the world’s museums.” —Anna Wintour, editor, Vogue magazine

- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseOhh my goodness I LOVE this book! It’s brilliant. It’s filled with the essence of Alexander McQueen and it’s utterly magic.
As an artist I have accumulated a lot of books on art. I collect them for their inspiration and instruction. I have books from the masters to children’s illustrated fairy tales. Dare I say, this book is my most treasured book of all. I love it so much I wish there was a copy in every room.
The passion of McQueen permeates every image, and every written line, which are many. They are of his works and runway visions.
Alexander McQueen was like no other. He was a tortured soul who stretched himself to project his visions. This book, this glorious book, tells that story.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI would expect nothing less than brilliance from a V&A publication. It’s so well researched, beautifully photographed and I love the way it’s been organized into Alexander’s different “visions”. I dare say it’s even better than the catalogue from The Met Exhibit. It’s like having a look inside his mind; I love the inclusion of his original sketches. Speaking of sketches, the one star reviewer who wanted us to know how much time he spends shopping in the boutiques….this is a book ABOUT Alexander McQueen and his dark genius, not a catalogue. If you were the true aficionado of McQueen and the collector of fashion books you claim to be, you would know the artist he truly was and that there’s a huge difference between fashion and art what’s sold to the masses in the boutiques. Those who left one star reviews because your book was damaged? That’s not a review, that’s a issue to take up with customer service. Bugger off!!!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2021Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI’m entranced with Alexander McQueen and his brilliant artistry. That’s why I purchased this book. It’s wonderful. Great essays and images of his fashion pieces. I love that it has a ribbon bookmark too— I’m reading it from the first page forward. It’s more than just a coffee table book. It’s a representation of the genius of this man who chose to leave too soon. I’m glad his work is so well represented so we can still appreciate his courage and “savage beauty” he brought to this world. So many artists are wonderful but so few speak in the otherworldly spheres of brilliance and surprising genius as he did. Great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is full of great pictures and documentation of the amazing Lee Alexander McQueen. I’ve loved his art and now understand his brilliance. The book is packed with so much detail, it is the best documentation of a fashion artist’s essence and craft- nothing is lost here- it is pure Lee.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhile I have a love for fashion, the main reason I bought this book was to use it as a chic coffee table piece. The cover is simple, yet elegant. The inside brings the world of McQueen straight to my living room. Wonderful pictures of McQueen's work; definitely conversation starters. One thing to note is this isn't just a "picture book" as there is a lot of text (about McQueen's collections and artistic process), so if you want a book that is primarily full page photos, there are others you can get. I'm very pleased with the quality of this book. If you love fashion or the arts, and you are looking for something elegant but with "substance" for your coffee table, this is it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality is not good
The book seems to be old as few pages are torn and it’s very dirty. The book is so expensive and it’s very annoying if the quality is so bad. But the book content is very amazing. Must buy for McQueen lovers.
