Tess Strebel can’t recognize her own face.

She can’t recognize her home. Her bedroom is unfamiliar. And she can’t remember the handsome stranger lying next to her in bed.
A stranger who claims he’s her husband.

Tess reads a letter in her own handwriting, composed during a rare lucid day, explaining her life as it now exists:
She was in a terrible car accident one year ago. Every morning, she wakes up unable to remember most of the last decade. Including her own wedding.

Tess has no choice but to accept her new life and hope her memory will return. After all,
why should she doubt the letter she wrote to herself? Or the kind man from the wedding photos on her dresser who seems to genuinely care about her well-being?

And then Tess receives
a text message on her phone. One that changes everything:

"Don’t trust the man who calls himself your husband."

The Movie Momento, But In Book Form!
4 out of 5 stars
The Movie Momento, But In Book Form!
"Do You Remember" by Freida McFadden ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🚫🌶️ In 2000 a movie was released called "Memento." It was a really fascinating and crazy. The main idea behind it, for people who haven't seen it, is that there is this man with short term memory loss. He wound up developing this issue after he and his wife were attacked in their house in the middle of the night. She was murdered and he was hit so severely on the head that it destroyed his ability to have short term memories remain. He was absolutely adamant, however, in finding his wife's murderer, so as the movie went on he was gaining more and more tattoos and sticky notes all over his body and his apartment for things to remind him of where he left off the day before. It was crazy! This book has a lot of those same scenarios running through it! It had me hooked from the beginning, but most of Freida's stuff does, so I'm not really surprised. Without providing spoilers, in this story we follow a woman who remembers being engaged and in love and getting ready to plan her future with her upcoming husband, but when she wakes up she finds a completely different man in her bed, in a completely different house, and with a completely different (only in that it's quite a bit older looking) face staring at her in the mirror. Could you imagine that sort of an issue every time you wake up and having to relearn where you currently stand in the world every single day? My gosh! So, what seems to be a story of a woman without short term memories begins to turn into some far more sinister. How is she going to be able to remind herself every day of the horrors she's uncovering? How will she hide it from the people in her life and can she even trust them? This was such a fun ride for me! I completed it in one day because I just couldn't stop reading it. haha If you're one of the people that can't stand Freida then don't bother, but if you're someone who loves her or is looking for an awesome book to get involved with, definitely give this one a shot!

The plot and characters were easy to follow since the book was written in the film style of Groundhog Day with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. It's a rom-com about how a cynical TV weatherman finds himself reliving the same day over and over again when he goes on location to the small town of Punxsutawney to film a report about their annual Groundhog Day. His predicament drives him to distraction until he sees a way of turning the situation to his advantage. This book seemed more like a cozy mystery than all of Freida McFadden's other books.

This book was really creative and I looked forward to reading it each night. The only reason for the 4 stars is that I felt it was a bit of a tedious read in the middle where each day was running into the next with details about the daily moments. I felt like I wanted to skip ahead a couple pages sometimes. However, Freida McFadden is a solid writer who never disappoints.

What a great story! Well, written, made my breath stop several times, then hyperventilate because of spoilers I cannot say here. I will say I was beginning to get a little tired of the repetition of the beginning of a couple of chapters but, you could tell she was aware of it and made sure it was not drawn out for too long. Seriously, a really great read!!

    Update
I don't know how I found it but eventually I read the explanation of why I was confused at the ending. Many other people were also confused and it was our fault LOL I'm glad that she also commented about the typos. I am the type of person to see every mistake in a book usually there's only one or two. But in her books there's a lot of typos but it's nice that she's aware of it and from now on I will keep track of what they are and let her know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Freida McFadden does not disappoint

As always, Freida McFadden does not disappoint.
An impeccable writing style that makes you enjoy the book a thousand times more, a story that captivates you from the first chapter and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end.

The only downside I have for this book is that the plot twist at the end did not leave me with my mouth open as on other occasions, I expected it and my suspicions were well on track from the beginning of the story.

But it was still a very good read and I recommend it to all lovers of psychological thrillers.

    5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on October 16, 2023
    Tess

    Tess
