Good spread-handle post hole digger.
For shallow holes this type of post hole digger can do the whole job, through roots and hard clay. You won't get much deeper than 2 feet though. Still, it's a good hole-starting digger type. Don't expect to get huge spadefulls of dirt as you dig, especially in hard dirt - it's easier to get small bites at a time loose and out. This particular digger has nice rot-proof handles and pretty good rubber grips. It's a bit stiff as far as closure force, but that gives you a little "auto-grip" action on the dirt, which is a plus. Price seems about right to me.
