Very cute book

Very cute book
The book is in song form. The pictures go among with each picture scene. Perfect book for kids to learn the song. The book, itself, is small though.

    Nice book about Christmas
  • Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2009

Mike Jaroszko's Away in a Manager puts the familiar Christmas carol in book form with masterful and stunning illustrations.

Each page illustrates some part of the biblical Christmas story, along with the simple words from the old, beloved song. For example, we see the shepherds visiting baby Jesus, Joseph, and Mary; we see a baby wrapped in cloth and laying in a manger; we see cattle looking curiously at the baby and the baby stirred awake.

In the second verse of the song (beginning "Be near me, Lord Jesus"), we see a young boy visiting church with his parents and younger sibling, praying, and giving gifts.

Throughout, the illustrations are realistic, glowing, and just plain lovely. It's easy to tell Jaroszko has worked as an illustrator for the Smithsonian, Reader's Digest, Scholastic, and other notable companies.

What I Like: This book is simple and stunning. My preschooler loves it.

What I Dislike: Nothing, really, although I think it's kind of funny newborn baby Jesus looks about two or three months old. Also, some parents who wish to avoid illustrations of grown up Jesus will object to the last page of the book, which shows Jesus welcoming the reader into Heaven.

    Overall Rating: Excellent.

I really love the idea of having an Away in the Manger book that has the song lyrics. I would like my children to learn the song, and they love illustrated Christmas Carol books. My toddler likes the book and sings along with the melody.

What bothers me somewhat is the final illustration: "And take us to heaven to live with thee there." I understand that it's really hard for any illustrator to draw heaven, not having been there, but the picture is of a stern Jesus with a cold background of sky and clouds. My four-year-old is very familiar with all kinds of illustrations meant to depict Jesus, but when she saw this picture, she was confused and said, "Who's that?" I think that kids who see this illustration may not particularly think that this heaven and that Jesus would be particularly pleasant.

If heaven must be illustrated, I might suggest using some of the images from Revelation, or Jesus with the children, or even the idea of Jesus preparing a place for his followers. But since we don't know what it looks like, perhaps just putting the last two lines of the song on the same two pages would be a good idea (with pictures of children) or using the "fit us for heaven" lyrics instead.

I understand that it's hard for an illustrator to get this right.

My other (less significant) complaint is that the people don't quite look the same from page to page. Mary and Jesus, particularly, have many differences in their facial features, the direction their hair grows, and their proportions. Otherwise, the illustrations are colorful, fairly realistic, and attractive--they're certainly much better than my own painting. I'm quite glad to have the book.

I am an aspiring author. I have no restrictions in choosing illustrators. If I could choose any Illustrator in the world it would be Mr. Jaroszko. I have yet to see anyone come close to depicting the realness that captures the soul.

The age old story with tender, lovely pictures make you almost want to whisper the telling so you don't wake up the Babe.
