Everything I Know About Love: The bestselling love letter to female friendship and major BBC One series Paperback – 7 Feb. 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
A celebration of our female friendships, of our messy years, and of growing up together. Glittering with wit, heart, and humour, it’s a book to share with every woman you’ve ever been lucky enough to call a friend.
“Nearly everything I know about love, I've learnt from my long-term friendships with women.”
I know that love can be loud and jubilant. It can be dancing in the swampy mud and the pouring rain at a festival and shouting “YOU ARE AMAZING” over the band. It’s laughing until you wheeze. It’s walking along the street together on a Saturday night and feeling an entire city is yours.
I also know that love is a pretty quiet thing. It’s lying on the sofa together drinking coffee, talking about where you’re going to go that morning to drink more coffee. It’s folding down pages of books you think they’d find interesting.
I know that love happens under the splendour of fireworks and sunsets, but also happens when you’re lying on blow-up airbeds in a childhood bedroom, sitting in A&E or in the queue for a passport.

Review
Very, very, very funny. Don't hate me when I tell you that Everything I Know About Love is Sex And The City for millennials, because I mean it as high praise ― Red
I loved it so much, I wanted it to go on forever, Dolly Alderton is so gifted at making people care. A rare talent ― Marian Keyes
Alderton is an old soul - she has learned life lessons while not yet out of her twenties that many of us post-menopausal matrons are still struggling with. A wonderful writer, who will surely inspire a generation the way that Caitlin Moran did before her. ― Julie Burchill
I thought I knew a lot about love. Not as much as Dolly. Read as soon as possible. ― Sharon Horgan

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 February 2024I read this at 26, and feel like this was the perfect age at which to dive into it. The book spoke so profoundly to the wilderness that can be one's 20s, and was both relatable, amusing, and heart-breaking. I couldn't put it down and read it in a day! I'm sure it would also appeal to other ages as well. Absolutely loved it, and would recommend to everyone
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 December 2024I ready this in less than 2 days. Very relatable to us millennial girls. And very true about our greatest love affairs….our girlfriends. It also helped me understand why I always felt a bit sad when each of my friends got married or had a baby. I’m obsessed with Dolly Alderton books now. I wish I could read it again for the first time all over again. Thank you Dolly.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 February 2025This book gives you a whole new view on love, relationships, family, and friends.
Dolly Alderton's rocky journey with love is very different but also relatable at the same time. Not just with her romantic partners, but with her friends and family.
There were times throughout the book when I was very intrigued by the experiences Dolly went through. The book had moments where I cared, laughed, and felt for Dolly.
I also watched the series after reading the book. Overall, I enjoyed it. Although, they could've added a couple more episodes. The series had moments from the book but also skipped some things as well.
However, despite a few issues, I still very much enjoyed this book. Dolly Alderton's take on love is definitely different compared to others, and therefore it was a rather refreshing read.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2020There was a lot of hype around this book, and so I thought I would read it for an insight into love and romance. The book was well-written and easy to read, with various different life experiences recounted in a warm and humorous way. I liked Dolly's "voice", her empathy, as well as her poetic and elegant use of language. While the book has many positive attributes and I am an admirer of Dolly's intelligence and insights on The High Low podcast, I found this read a little too frivolous and superficial for my liking. Much of the content was slightly daft and inconsequential and while some would argue that is the source of the book's charm and essence, I remained unconvinced. I suppose I was looking for an in-depth analysis of love, with deep reflection and wisdom, rather than a straightforward account of somebody's experiences. Perhaps because I am not that interested in parties and socialising, for example, I could not relate to some of the content. It could simply be that this book was not what I erroneously perceived it to be and it is not the book that is at fault. Either way, for whatever reason, while I did enjoy it in some ways, it did not quite live up to my expectations. Perhaps if I had read this "pre-hype", I would have approached it less critically.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2025Thoroughly enjoyed
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 February 2025Very happy with this product thanks
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 January 2024This book is a delightful memoir filled with humor and relatable anecdotes about love, friendship, and growing up. Alderton's writing style is engaging and easy to follow, making it a pleasant read overall, though there are moments where the pace slows down.
As someone living in London, I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of familiar locations, which added an extra layer of enjoyment to my reading experience. While I couldn't relate to all of her experiences, particularly her party-centric lifestyle, I found aspects of her journey resonated with me, especially as someone close to her age who is also navigating the complexities of relationships and adulthood.
However, despite its charms, I can't help but feel that the book is slightly overhyped. While it offers valuable insights and entertainment, it may not live up to all the praise it has received. Nonetheless, it remains a worthwhile read for anyone seeking a light-hearted and relatable story about love and life.

This was my second book from Dolly, and she just became my favourite.
Her writing style and transperency captured me. Funny, touching and takes you through the rollercoaster of emotions and lands you smoothly at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read
How do I even begin to explain what this book means to me? this book talks about love in all shapes and all sizes. Love in the nature of friendship, and love in the nature in romance. It makes you look at yourself and understand these parts of you as a person, the good and the bad. The things that make life worth living. It’s womanhood, the shared tears and laugher with your closest friends. The memories of good and bad experiences but with a view of how they have made you who you are today, and what you will be. The easy and the difficult, the fun and the hard. It’s a book about navigating life and all the shit that comes with that.
