Sony Alpha Full-frame E-mount Wide Prime G Master Lens
The 24mm F1.4 GM features an advanced optical design, including two XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that delivering outstanding corner-to-corner resolution, even at a wide F1.4 aperture. An 11-blade circular aperture mechanism creates beautiful bokeh that is a hallmark of the G Master series. Fast focusing is attained through the DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive system. This lens sports class-leading size and weight, providing great handling and mobility.
Features
Compact G Master wide prime lens w/ stunning wide-open resolution
The FE 24mm F1.4 GM realizes consistently high resolution across the entire frame and delivers soft and natural bokeh - a signature feature of Sony’s G Master lens series. It also boasts a new optical design comprised of 10 groups with 13 elements, including two XA (extreme aspherical) and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. The incorporation of two XA elements ensures that point light sources can be accurately reproduced, making the FE 24mm F1.4 GM a compelling proposition for astrophotography. For impressive clarity, Sony’s unique Nano AR Coating is applied to reduce lens flare and ghosting, even in landscape shots where the position of the sun can be problematic with a normal lens.
F1.4 max aperture
The F1.4 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field, allowing you to isolate your subject from the foreground and background with amazing light gathering capabilities when shooting wide open. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.
11-blade circular aperture contributes to gorgeous bokeh
The 11-blade circular aperture maximizes the beauty of this large-aperture prime-lens, contributing to impressive images in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused foreground and background, as well as perfectly round points of defocused light. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides that create unappealing, polygonal-shaped defocused points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
Features
Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) for fast, quiet, precise focusing
The 24mm F1.4 GM lens supports hybrid autofocus for both contrast and focal-plane phase detection AF. It has a high-precision Direct Drive Super Sonic Motor (DDSSM) system that ensures exceptionally fast, quiet and accurate AF performance. The precision internal focus mechanism aids in AF speed by moving only the middle groups of the optical system and effectively minimizing focus breathing, while keeping the lens size compact and lightweight. In addition to being the ideal wide prime lens for stills, it is also exceptionally suited for video with a linear motor that takes on the vital role of ‘wobbling’ to providing high-speed actuation for the contrast AF detection system, for smooth, continuous AF.
Two XA (Extreme Aspherical) lens element
The 24mm F1.4 GM employs two XA (Extreme Aspherical) lens element, one of which is the front lens. This large-diameter front XA lens element features a new optical design, maximizing the advantages of the short mirrorless camera flange distance, and effectively suppresses various aberrations, especially the peripheral area in the frame and sagittal flare. Two XA elements compensate for coma, field curvature, and astigmatism that can be problems with wide-angle large-aperture optics. This also contributes to the compact and lightweight design.
Nano AR coating suppresses reflections, flare and ghosting
Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology minimizes flare and ghosting, for dynamic range that achieves lifelike detail and gradation with advanced camera sensors. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than with lenses that use coatings with an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.
Features
Compact, lightweight design
This remarkably compact and lightweight lens weighs in at only 15.7oz (445g) with smallest in class dimensions of 3” (75.4mm) diameter and 3-3/4” (92.4mm) in length. It’s compact, lightweight design enhances portability and mobility thanks to the combination of optical design utilizing two XA elements and the newly developed DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) AF system.
Manual aperture ring w/ selectable on/off click for stills or movie
A responsive manual aperture ring offers positive action that will satisfy professional photographers and moviemakers alike. The aperture ring click stops can be switched on or off as required. “Off” is the preferred setting for moviemaking since it results in the least aperture operation noise. When “On” the ring provides tactile feedback that is useful when shooting stills.
Focus hold button, programmable for multiple functions
The focus hold button not only performs its primary function to lock focus when recomposing, but can be customized to a number of other functions depending on your needs. In addition to Focus Hold, these custom functions include: Eye AF, AF On, Aperture Preview, Shot Result Preview or Bright Monitoring.
Features
Dust and moisture resistant for robust reliability
The dust and moisture resistance design makes this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures.
Astrophotography Sagittal flare suppression
Sagittal flare is a phenomenon that results in an unnatural spreading of point light sources that appears somewhat like a bird spreading its wings and becomes more pronounced towards the image periphery. It is most common in large-aperture lenses. The 24mm F1.4 GM incorporates a new optical design, including two XA lens elements, to effectively suppress and correct for sagittal flare, making this lens ideal for night sky and astrophotography.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024Style: ‘w/ 24mm G Master’Verified PurchaseI didn't want to pay full price for the lens so I took a chance and bought a used lens thru amazon. I was very happy with the purchase. It was in almost new condition and it was $300 less than the full price.
This lens is not really small but it's not as huge as some of the other full frame lenses for Sony cameras. Coming from an a6300 I was used to compact and lightweight so it was a compromise to buy a full frame a7cii and a few other FF lenses. I already had 4 in my arsenal but I wanted lower light prime and 24mm is perfect for me. (IF I want a longer focal length I only have to put it in ASP-C mode)
The lens is a perfect balance for the A7cii. Not too large and very balanced. The autofocus is spot on for a Sony lens. It has several buttons on it that make it a "G" lens although I don't always use them but I'm glad they're there.
If you're on the fence about a low light prime you will be very happy with this 24mm "G" lens. The filter thread isn't ridiculous and I have a few other lenses with the same filter thread OR I just a step up or step down ring. I've gotten incredible photos with this lens and I can't wait to use it for more photography.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2021Style: ‘w/ 24mm G Master’Verified PurchaseJust got this lens a few weeks ago but I absolutely live it! The sharpness is amazing and autofocus is as good as it gets for Sony. The video from this lens is just epic on an A7R III. Highly recommend this lens for video. Also, very good for astro! The f1.4 allows so much light that you can get away with shorter shutter speeds to avoid star trails. The f1.4 also creates a super shallow depth of field and creamy bokeh. It shines at night or in low light. Perfect wide angle for most applications! My only complaint is the high price tag but it is worth it so far. Still need my 14-24mm for the wider end. On A7R III the wide focal length isn't as bad for distant subjects (in a pinch, or no longer lens available) as the sharpness is SO good you can crop for days on the 42mp RAW files to zoom in a bit. Or, use it in APS-C mode for 36mm @18mp files. SO GOOD!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2019Style: ‘w/ 24mm G Master’Verified PurchaseI am primarily a Canon shooter but after buying and testing many of the fast and wide astro lenses for my Canon body, I was left hoping for something better. The best I've found (Tamron 15-30 f/2.8) is a relatively good astro lens with low coma and wide FOV, but I really wanted something faster. When I saw the initial astro reviews for this Sony 24mm f/1.4 I knew I had to give it a whirl, so I picked up a A7iii and this lens and have been using it for several months now. Bottom line is that I'm very impressed. The star distortion is very low. I had tested the Sigma Art 20mm f/1.4 and found it unusable but this Sony is so much better. At f/1.4 the far corners have a little bit of coma which you can notice at 100% magnification, but by f/2.0 this is essentially gone. I also like the sharpness, and feel the size and weight are outstanding for the image quality this lens delivers. I still prefer my Canon for daytime use (love the optical viewfinder), but for wide angle night work, the Sony A7 + 24mm f/1.4 is my preferred setup

I was debating between spending the money on the FE 16-35 f/2.8 GM or the f/4 Zeiss lens. all this time, however, the 24mm GM was in the back of my mind, and I couldn't stop thinking about how sexy a lens it it.
Getting a 16-35 would be the "safe" choice. I needed it because every youtube talking head was drilling it into my head that I should get it. YOU NEED ATHE HOLY TRINITY. Well I, have the Tammy 28-74 f/2.8 and the 100-400GM as well, so i was never going to have a proper holy trinity of lenses anyway, so I decided YOLO and ordered the 24mm f/1.4 GM instead. I am very glad I did. This lens is stunning. It's barely left my camera since I got it.
It's the sharpest lens I own, and the build quality is amazing and it's significantly less expensive than the 16-35GM while being plenty wide for my needs. I don't regret calling an audible and getting this lens instead. If you're on the fence about this lens, do it. It's a very special lens.

I was debating between spending the money on the FE 16-35 f/2.8 GM or the f/4 Zeiss lens. all this time, however, the 24mm GM was in the back of my mind, and I couldn't stop thinking about how sexy a lens it it.What can I say? Perfection.

I own this, 50mm 1.2 GM, 24-70 GM II, 100-400 GM, but if I had to bring only one lens to cover a random situation including low-light photography, it'd be 24mm 1.4 GM. Never disappoints and is so small I can keep it in my pocket. If you're starting with high-quality glass, this is the fool-proof entry point, and once you get other more expensive lenses after this, you'll find yourself coming back to 24mm GM again and again. Can do video (with minimal focus breathing), landscapes, astro, street, group photos, and even portraits with beautiful bokeh. To me, 24mm 1.4 GM is the ultimate travel lens.

It does a great job capturing a wide range of indoor and outdoor shots even under very low-light conditions. With the 1.4 aperture, it is possible to get some great astrophotography. While filming in a nearly dark cemetery at night, I was able to capture some great film without any grain and it even does well with portrait if close enough to the subject. Overall, this is a well rounded lens for film and photography, providing a wider angle without distortion at the edges or a warped image. It is a pricier lens, but I have gotten a lot of use out of it and will continue to use it as my go-to lens.

I expected the GM to be a bit better. It isn't IMO. In my experience they are both equally sharp. Since I got such a great deal on the 24mm, I'll keep it for low light situations. But if you are strapped for cash and have to choose, the 20mm F1.8 is just as good in virtually every aspect. The attached xFine JPG test shot is SOOC (no processing).

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing full frame lens from Sony
Style: ‘w/ 24mm G Master’Verified PurchaseI love this lens. The G Master series of lenses from Sony are all premium lenses, well worth the money to me. F1.4 on a wide angle full frame lens is awesome for shallow DOF shooting or low available light situations. F stops on the lens are declicked if you choose that on the barrel of the lens. Auto focusing on Sony Alpha R7 Mark 3 is very fast. I can’t think of anything I dislike about this lens. So many people want this lens and are on a waiting list. I got lucky with one through Amazon.
