Shark Heart: A Love Story Hardcover – August 8, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
A USA TODAY Bestseller
A Booklist Editor’s Choice
A Goodreads Choice Award Nominee
A “beautifully written” (Anthony Doerr, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of All the Light We Cannot See) debut novel of marriage, motherhood, metamorphosis, and letting go, this intergenerational love story begins with newlyweds Wren and her husband, Lewis—a man who, over the course of nine months, transforms into a great white shark.
For Lewis and Wren, their first year of marriage is also their last. A few weeks after their wedding, Lewis receives a rare diagnosis. He will retain most of his consciousness, memories, and intellect, but his physical body will gradually turn into a great white shark. As Lewis develops the features and impulses of one of the most predatory creatures in the ocean, his complicated artist’s heart struggles to make peace with his unfulfilled dreams.
At first, Wren internally resists her husband’s fate. Is there a way for them to be together after Lewis changes? Then, a glimpse of Lewis’s developing carnivorous nature activates long-repressed memories for Wren, whose story vacillates between her childhood living on a houseboat in Oklahoma, her time with her college ex-girlfriend, and her unusual friendship with a woman pregnant with twin birds. Woven throughout this “heart-wringing” (Adam Roberts, internationally bestselling author of Salt) novel is the story of Wren’s mother, Angela, who becomes pregnant with Wren at fifteen in an abusive relationship amidst her parents’ crumbling marriage. In the present, all of Wren’s grief eventually collides, and she is forced to make an impossible choice.
A sweeping love story that is at once lyrical and funny, airy and visceral, Shark Heart is an unforgettable, gorgeous novel about life’s perennial questions, the fragility of memories, finding joy amidst grief, and creating a meaningful life. This daring debut marks the arrival of a wildly talented new writer abounding with originality, humor, and heart.

Editorial Reviews
Review
—New York Times Book Review
“It’s quite a feat to weave such a wild speculative element into a story that feels fundamentally relatable, resonant, human. Yes, Shark Heart is the kind of delightfully original story I adore, and the sort of book I’ll be pressing into the hands of friends with a vigorous nod. Yes, it actually works.” —Shelby Van Pelt, New York Times bestselling author of Remarkably Bright Creatures
"Undeniably unique in every sense of the word, “Shark Heart” by Emily Habeck proves that love knows no bounds. This thought-provoking read will have you feeling all the feels." —New York Post, "15 Best Beach Read of All Time to Pick Up Before Labor Day"
"Shark Heart is a fantastical, original, and beautifully-written novel of abandonment, love, and Ovidian transformation. It explores illness, caretaking, devotion, magical thinking, and loss—and of course great white sharks—in ways that are funny, sad, and surprising. Every page bursts with heart.
—Anthony Doerr, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of All the Light We Cannot See and Cloud Cuckoo Land
"In Shark Heart, Emily Habeck doesn’t shy away from the agony of goodbyes, or the torture that can accompany unexpected freedom. With an otherworldly tenderness, she reminds us that life will always demand that we give over to its momentum and adapt. The fact that these lessons are thrilling, hilarious, and effortless to read are the miracle of the book. I suspect I will ponder this book over and over; so rich with fantasy yet as frank and real as anything I’ve ever read."
—Mary Louise Parker, author of Dear Mr. You
"Without a doubt, “Shark Heart” by Emily Habeck is one of the most unique and beautifully written books I've read. It’s quite an emotional ride and, truly, would never have thought an unorthodox novel about a human man transforming into a shark would be moving but the words and overall storyline infused with love, grief and loss will hit you deeply." —New York Post
“Surprisingly moving, oddly heartwarming, and deeply contemplative.”
—Bookpage
“A bit Shakespeare, a bit Kafka, and a bit Disney… [this] debut stands out from the pack.”
—Kirkus Reviews
"a sweet and heartbreaking tale highlighting the hiccups of marriage, motherhood, and grief."
—Cosmopolitan, "The 19 Summer Books That Are Must-Brings for Your Next Beach Vacay"
"A highly original, heart-rending story about abiding love that transcends trauma, grief—and even metamorphosis."
—Washington Post, "10 Noteworthy Books for July and August"
“The sophisticated, emotionally charged poetic language Habeck uses and her writing style makes you think about all of the people you have loved — and how time is truly something to be cherished…It was extremely well-done… This is the perfect example of a book that once you read, you’ll want to talk to everyone you know about it… this book is filled with some of the most beautiful language (and story) you’ll encounter.”—New York Post
“A tender story about the endurance of a married couple’s love… Vulnerable and devastating.”
—PopSugar
“Raw, powerful, and delightfully unusual… [Shark Heart] is structurally and lyrically daring, so much so that its pages quickly envelop readers in its emotional challenges and magic… While it begs readers to contemplate what it means to be human, it also challenges them to look at their circumstances carefully and reminds them to be grateful for what they have at hand rather than dwelling on what they may have lost. Shark Heart is an unforgettable and much needed love story for a new, uncertain, and rapidly changing era.”
–Southern Review of Books
"Habeck’s debut explores the nature of grief through deft and beautiful writing… Poetic interludes and play-like vignettes punctuate the lyrical prose”
—Booklist (Starred Review)
“A poignant tale of grief and change.”
—Town and Country
"Shark Heart is one of those rare books that reaches right into you and reflects lived experience so exactly, and so poetically, that it feels like you're being seen. It wears its heart openly and unapologetically on its sleeve. Equal parts tenderly comedic and tragic, the book was a difficult one to read, but I'm so glad I did."
—Marianne Gordon, author of The Gilded Crown
‘A stunning debut which grabs you with its unique style, holds you within its vulnerability and leaves you with a bittersweet aching. This is not just a story of love, it’s a story of goodbyes. Habeck delivers an innovative and inspirational story that emotionally captures its readers until the end.’
—Fantasy Hive
"A beautifully written, heart-wringing story about love and change, about moving forward—as a shark always must—and what is lost and what gained as we do so. Habeck has an extraordinary command of her writerly instrument, crafting sentence after sentence that feel effortless and yet are eloquent and penetrating and superb. This is the highlight of my reading-year so far."
—Adam Roberts, international bestselling author of Salt and The This

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2025One of my favorite books! The writing is beautiful and flows so well that you barely flinch at the idea that people could have mutations that cause them to turn into animals. I am fascinated by sharks, which helped pique my interest in this book. I heard about it from a friend who posted that she couldn't stop reading and highly recommended it. She has never steered me wrong and hasn't broken that trend yet! This book is worth reading. When we moved to part two, I tripped a bit but was rewarded when I saw how it all went together. Even so, part 1 was my favorite part. I wanted more!
I want to read more by Emily Habeck and was blown away to discover this is her debut novel! She is an author to watch! I am looking forward to her future works.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2024I have to admit I got this book on impulse on Kindle Black Friday deal days, having only read the first couple lines of the synopsis and the list of awards. It was like $1 so I got it. Then I read the full synopsis and was like “what the hell did I just get?” I love quirky books though, and my curiosity was piqued. Having really enjoyed Nightbitch, I gave it a go.
I was delightfully impressed. Shark Heart is beautifully written, truly unique, and the world building is comprehensive and believable. Anytime I describe the plot and characters to a friend they are like “wtf, that is so weird.” But because the world building and descriptions are so thoughtful and genuine, the mythological undertones in this gorgeous story bring a creative telling of love and loss. If you want something uplifting and different, this is your book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2024A beautiful, moving, and heartbreaking portrait of marriage and parenthood, Emily Habeck's Shark Heart masterfully uses an insane premise as a powerful metaphor to explore some of the deepest fears, joys, and sacrifices necessary to fully love someone..
In Shark Heart, young couple Lewis and Wren have only recently married when Lewis receives a distressing medical diagnosis: He's tested positive for Carcharodon Carcharias, a genetic mutation that will gradually transform him into a Great White Shark in a matter of months. One of the many tricks author Emily Habeck pulls here is that Lewis's condition is played 100% straight. While rare, in the world of Shark Heart, these kind of mutations are commonplace enough to be accepted as one might a cancer diagnosis.
At first, Wren and Lewis attempt to continue on life as normal, but as Lewis's transformation becomes more unavoidable, the couple began preparing for the inevitable: Lewis's release into the ocean. Intertwined with Wren and Lewis's story is the tale of Wren's mother, Angela, whose own experience with a genetic mutation shapes Wren's trauma response to her husband's fate.
Shark Heart blew me away. Not only is it intensely emotional and life-affirming, but it's written with such a unique collection of formats. From one-sentence pages and to scenes written as if they came from a play (complete with stage direction), Shark Heart's 430 pages flew by — I read this novel in a couple of hours.
I rarely get teary-eyed reading a book, but there are some gut-wrenching and beautiful sequences in Shark Heart that will be instantly relatable to anyone who has ever loved a spouse or child. Habeck uses the magic realism element to her supreme advantage, and it's a great stylistic choice that allows her to get up and close personal with the fears that can only come from opening your heart up to love.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2023I can honestly say I've never read a book like this. The format which in some parts reads like a script or play and other parts a poem, but flows perfectly. Then we have the actual synposis, which is a woman's husband mutates into a great white shark. Yes, you read that correctly. This book is about a man who discovers he has a mutant gene that causes him to transform into a shark.
Hear me out though! I couldn't stop reading it. It was so good.
The prose is poetic and beautiful and it contains a multitude of love stories- between husband and wife and mother and daughter. This book would be great for a book club. It definitely would stir up some dialogue.
I started to lose interest when we swapped to Angela's story. It makes sense of the author's purpose for this part of the book and becomes a major tear jerker. 🥺 Just in the moment, it was distracting and I really wanted to get back to Wren and Lewis's storyline. I'm glad we get Angela's story! I just thought it messed the flow of reading up for me in the moment.
I'm ashamed to say when I saw this book as an option for Book of The Month, I skirted right over it. Because although, the cover is gorgeous, I had heard literally nothing about it and ignorantly didn't even acknowledge it as one of my choices and went with an author I was familiar with instead. I regret that decision. 😅 After hearing the latent buzz, I decided to purchase the book and I am glad I did.
All in all, is this book weird? Yes. It's quite frankly the weirdest, most unique book I have read all year...maybe ever. But if you like magical realism or beautiful prose or lit fiction, then I say check it out, because I am glad I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melancholic yet beautiful.
It's about a woman who watches her husband turn into a shark. Metaphorical for losing someone to some terminal illness. It's much more than that. It's a beautiful book, deeply melancholic and ends with a hopeful note.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal
This book is superb. Gorgeously evocative. Surprising. Magical.
I haven’t read anything like it before and yet it felt familiar.
A reasonably challenging read but exceptional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly, beautifully profound
I did not have high hopes for this, picking it up for the mere fact that i wanted something light and relatively brainless - and also because i love sharks.
However, as i continued rather whimsically, the depths of humanity revealed in the characters drew me in. Soon enough, i was enchanted. This is a story about love, trauma, tragedy, growth and the tension between our dreams and reality. It breaks your heart over and over again, only to further reveal that deep, often permanent brokenness is not necessarily the end of all goodness.
Congratulations to Emily Habeck for a stellar work of art. I am looking forward to the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars I didn’t want it to end
An unusual idea that doesn’t seem so unusual while you’re reading it, it seems perfectly normal and reasonable. I really enjoyed the sub-story in the middle and I didn’t want any of it to end. It’s a quick read so if you’re thinking about it, give it a go to consider something you’ve probably never thought about before!

5.0 out of 5 stars So beautiful
I've tried so many times to describe this book to others to encourage them to read it, and I just can't do it justice. I won't be able to here, but just know it's beautiful, life-affirming, heartbreaking, intense. It's one of my favourite books I've read in recent years.
