Beautiful components and art, fun theme, way too easy ot win
I love cooperative games and was eager to try this out. The core set collection mechanism immediately reminded me of Bohnanza, which is an old family favorite. I set it up by myself as a two player game to test it out and enjoyed it, but won very easily. I then tried again with a few rules corrections and this game got off to a rough start, but I still had no problem winning with the balloon only making it through less than half the track (you lose if it reaches space 13 and it got to 5 or 6). I checked all the rules before playing with my family and I'm fairly certain I'm playing right, and even used the 4-player chapter deck with 3 players which gives fewer bonuses. Again, we won with the balloon about half way through the track. I like the planning and decisions here, but it's odd to me that there doesn't feel like there's any tension or threat of losing, even without really trying to optimize our actions. I generally don't like games to be super difficult to win, but the win here feels very unrewarding. Mechanically, only one player at a time gets to do anything, but turns are quick so I don't mind this too much. Other than getting a bonus for specific set colors, each player doesn't feel distinct so you could just have one person making all the decisions about how to distribute cards. The game play and decisions overall are very light. There is some strategy and planning, and it's enjoyable, but because of the lack of difficulty it just doesn't feel like intense planning matters too much. I also wish there was some variety in the chapters. The progression and bonuses are the same every time, which takes away from the excitement of completing a chapter to see what bonus you'll get after a play or two. The components are art are beautiful, but I kind of hate the little magic domes. They're round and are supposed to sit in a track around the tower, but because they're round and smooth I really have a hard time picking these up. I just ended up flipping them upside down in a pile to the side, which is far less thematic, but significantly easier to work with. Smooth domes are about the worst shape you can choose for game pieces which need to be frequently picked up. Overall, if you love Wicked and want a light cooperative game, this is certainly not a bad choice. If you like a challenge and value a rewarding win, this is probably not the best option unless you want to add some house-rules to up the difficulty. As a kid-friendly game that's very forgiving, this does encourage communication and planning among the team and allows each player a chance to make decisions for the group. It's not a bad game mechanically, but I think it lacks a bit of excitement in regard to repeated plays and offers almost nothing in regard to a strategic challenge.
