The year is 1969. Dick Nixon was just sworn in as the thirty-seventh President of the United States. Neil Armstrong just took one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind. And notable Palm Springs socialite Maxine Simmons just found out that her husband is leaving her for his twenty-two-year-old secretary.

After a public meltdown at Thanksgiving, Maxine finds herself not only divorced but exiled to Scottsdale, Arizona. However, these desert boondocks will not be her end—only her Elba. The former beauty queen sets her eyes on a new crown: that of the Mrs. American Pie pageant, awarded to the nation’s best wife and mother.

Maxine only has one problem: to win the crown she’ll need to find—or build—a family of her own.

About the Author

Juliet McDaniel came of age during a time when beauty pageants were rapidly becoming tacky relics of a far more sexist time, or so she thought. Although raised in Arizona, she spent the last 25 years living in Chicago, and knows its history and culture inside and out, so those places became a fitting home for her characters. Juliet has a B.A. in American Studies from Lake Forest College and a M.A. in Writing from DePaul University. She has had several screenplays optioned, and one produced: indie rom-com QWERTY, released in 2012. Mr. & Mrs. American Pie is her first novel.

Crazily Unique
Maxine's Palm Springs social climbing days were over when her husband dumped her for his very young and pregnant secretary. Maxine got the Buick, some money (not enough to live the way she did even in 1969), the condo in Scottsdale she didn't know her husband owned, and went nutty. This book made me roll my eyes occasionally, irritated me occasionally, and made me an unbeliever more than occasionally. However, I ended-up adoring many of the characters and the heartwarming ending. I know that not everyone will like it and a few will hate it, but it is so unexpected and over the top that I ended-up enjoying it. I give it a B+.

Very first of all, the book has a sticker on cover advertising the Apple TV+ show "Palms Royale" as being based on the book. I am not sure how they can claim that. The book and the show have very little in common if not for some of the characters' names. BUT, the book is a gem !!! The story even though different from the TV show is fun, sweet, heartbreaking all at once. It's mainly the story of 4 people who have been rejected by a "loved one", get together and form another family while going through incredible adventures. So well written, so fun, I was sad when it ended so I tried to make it last as long as possible.

This book is not a literary masterpiece but it is quite enjoyable and I really loved the characters. It also represents some important topics that I was not expecting it to represent.

Maxine Simmons is a socialite trying to fit in in the elite area of Palm Springs when her husband leaves her unexpectedly for her secretary. Maxine is sheltered and spoiled, yet manipulative and with her reasoning skills finds herself in Scottsdale, Arizona, far from the luxury of Palm Springs. Lost and bored, Maxine longs for the days that she was in beauty pageants as they gave her purpose. But there is one problem; Maxine is too old and too divorced for the majority of pageants. When she finds a pageant for married women with children, Maxine creatively finds a way to get herself right in the middle of it, with a fake family that she has created. Maxine is witty, smart, and hilarious and all of the characters in her faux family are equally enjoyable. I really enjoyed the various perspectives that this book showed and it was definitely a fun read. There are definitely a few holes in the plot and it's somewhat unrealistic, but it is still a good read.

I definitely represent this book. It was fun, funny, and also surprisingly smart. It is light, yet meaningful and I truly enjoyed it.

Mr. And Mrs. American Pie is a cross between a John Waters film and the book Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin. I laughed my way through this book envisioning Divine, the star of many John Waters films playing the heroine, Maxine. The other characters in the book are fully fleshed out, especially Chuck Bronski who I just loved. If you’re looking for a truly heartwarming and funny book to cheer you up this is your ticket.

A fun read that captures the essence of family, friendship, and self-discovery.
The second part of the book surpasses the first in both depth and engagement.
While the first part sets the stage and introduces the characters, it could benefit from being shorter to maintain pacing and momentum. The second part gets right down to action while also delving deeper into the characters' emotions and challenges, making it both more captivating and meaningful. Overall, it’s quite an enjoyable book, with good enough storytelling and character development, that’ll have you throwing chuckles all the time.

This book was recommended to me by my past purchases. The first 30-40 pages in, I was thinking this was a total mistake. I mean, sure Maxine was sort of funny in a Real Housewives way but the way the story started off, I was expecting something quite different. Once it got going, it really picked up speed and was a great story. I found it funny and endearing and while totally not what I expected, I ended up loving the book. I hope Reese Whiterspoon hears of this book becasue it would make a cute addition to her book club and potential movie!

I loved this book so much! Maxine is the quirkiest character that I have encountered in quite some time. I am so happy that I have met her. Her cunning ability to always get what she wants is spectacular and she always does it in such a sweet way. Her family is amazing and all so smart and wonderful in their own way. I highly recommend this fun, feel good story. Kuddos to Juliet for an amazing inaugural book. I look forward to reading more from you!

The first few pages had me wondering if I would keep reading…I wasn’t in the mood to read about any of life’s low points, but I carried on reading and I am so glad that I did!

I can easily see the author as a stand- up comedian! This book was a joy-fulled romp through the insanity of “high-society” circa 1969-1970’s and the grit and determination that can make a woman thoroughly reshape her life into something so much more real. Those were turbulent times and society was experiencing sea changes that have repercussions to the present day.

I chuckled and guffawed my way through the book which manages to poke fun at the vagaries of “high-society” during these times while leading us through a totally unbelievable “home-maker” beauty pageant that was so delightfully stylized that I wondered in amazement at the mind that could have created the “word pictures” that I envisioned as I read!

This read was fun, delightful and eminently readable!

I was up to 3am reading this because I had to know how it all ended.

Although the story skips through three different points of view (with a heartwarming fourth in the final chapter) it's safe to say that the centrepiece and star of the story is Maxine. She's a scheming, plotting socialite, but we soon find out that she has an unspoken capacity for compassion, something I'm not sure she herself even realises or recognises as such. The chapters told from her point of view sparkle with her personality, such that although we know that her plot to win the Mrs. American Pie pageant is wrong, we cheer her along anyway -- and hope that ultimately, that capacity for compassion will win through and she'll do the right thing.
