Evidence of the Affair Kindle Edition
The repercussions of an illicit affair unfold in this short story by bestselling author Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Dear stranger…
A desperate young woman in Southern California sits down to write a letter to a man she’s never met—a choice that will forever change both their lives.
My heart goes out to you, David. Even though I do not know you…
The correspondence between Carrie Allsop and David Mayer reveals, piece by piece, the painful details of a devastating affair between their spouses. With each commiserating scratch of the pen, they confess their fears and bare their souls. They share the bewilderment over how things went so wrong and come to wonder where to go from here.
Told entirely through the letters of two comforting strangers and those of two illicit lovers, Evidence of the Affair explores the complex nature of the heart. And ultimately, for one woman, how liberating it can be when it’s broken.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2022Amazing short story! I listened to this Audible book this morning while working.
I am a little late to the party on this one...but I loved it! ❤️
Beginning in 1976, a written correspondence commences between the wife and husband whose spouses are having an affair with one another.
87 pages. That's all it took to make me love the characters and to make me root for David and Carrie with all my heart. I'm in awe with how Taylor Jenkins Reid made me feel so many strong emotions. The whole book is written through letters, but don't let that stop you: it was definitely the perfect way to tell this story. Some letters were gut-wrenching . They felt so real, like they were addressed to me.
“I’ve always been struck by the idea that you can’t be all that happy something has returned if it doesn’t go away in the first place.”
This a very short story, but packs a powerful, poignant, and emotional punch. How an author manages to cram so many turbulent feelings, and incredible character growth into such a small amount of space is remarkable
Not only was this book heart wrenching, it was also fascinating, what with the aspect of music and lyrics bringing Sydney and Ridge together. If there’s one thing that gets me as emotional as books do, it’s music. I have to say: my favorite part of this whole novel would be the lyrics. Every word was just so perfect for every scene, every emotion, and I just loved it beyond everything else. A gorgeous soundtrack accompanies Maybe Someday and it contains the songs Sydney and Ridge wrote for and about each other. Listening to the soundtrack album while reading the respective scenes was the best thing ever! I’ve never had such an unforgettable reading experience until this one!
“Lately, it feels like my whole life has a similar feeling to when you check the clock on a Saturday and realize it’s already half past four.”
I didn't expect the ending. The twist was SO GOOD!
I felt so many emotions reading the letters-heartbreak, despair, hope. As a married woman, I would be devastated if something like this happened to me, and I shed real tears for Carrie and David. I did like that we got to see some of the letters from Janet and Ken as well, despite how sick and angry they made me feel. While their spouses were having an affair, these strangers found each other, helped and supported each other, and it was beautiful.
“It is funny the crazy things our brains make up to save us from the truth.”

- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024I wanted a quick read and this served its purpose. All throughout this short story I came up with so many endings of where this book was going to land. It came up really, really short. Great author, still one of my favorites.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2024Taylor Jenkins Reid gives us a different kind of love story in Evidence of the Affair written in an unexpectedly delightful and entertaining way.
When Carrie finds evidence that her husband is having an affair with David’s wife, she sends him a letter. They then begin corresponding back and forth about their spouse’s affair and eventually meet and become friends.
I really liked the format of the book with the letters corresponding back and forth. The story was quick, to the point. There were two twists at the end, one was more revealing of a character flaw, I saw that coming and the other was a huge plot twist that I just didn’t see, so good and great ending for a short story.
I listened to the audiobook. It was narrated by Julia Whelan, George Newbern, James Daniels, and Dara Rosenberg. I enjoyed the narration, never got bored or distracted. I would listen to them again.
I recommend this book for a quick read or listen.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2025Worth the short read. This was the first TJR book, so I think I'm ready for something a little longer now.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2024This short book was written as a series of letters, first from the spouses of the two people having an affair. The second set of letters were from the couple having the fling.
I gave this three stars, not because I enjoyed it, but because the letters were well written. Otherwise the story was just sad and relatively boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars so good
I love this style of writing and how the relationship transforms and blossoms Beth the characters. I just wish he left his wife and moved with Carrie and his sons. I wish it didn’t finish on a half finished story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy s***!
I’ve had this jewel in my kindle library for so long, but only now brought myself to read it. And I loved every page! What a sad, tragic, heartbreaking, beautiful and healing tale of two aching souls finding each other in an unorthodox (to say the least) situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars This author understands love...
This little 88 page read was stunning! How TJR could put me through so much emotion is such a little book I have got no idea!
This is a story about why affairs are not always straight forward. Sometimes they happen because needs are not fulfilled or because a couple can lose sight of one another. Sometimes they happen because people don't believe in monogamy or because they like to eat their cake and have it too.
But it is also a story about how the resolutions of affairs are not straight forward either. Some people choose to see an affair as symptomatic of something that can be fixed. Others choose to see it as evidence of something that can't be fixed.
Told only through letters this story was filled with emotion which strangely, included happiness.
This author has the ability to understand and convey the fact that love does not exist within the parameters that we poor, uncomprehending mortals set for it and for that I will read every single one of her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifuly, quick read
This is a short book, so it was a delightful train read this morning. I loved the letter format of the book as it really suited the story it told so well and I believe the story would probably have been much more boring and unnecessarily drawn out, had it been told in a normal novel format. The letters read quick and it was very easy to picture the people and their situations with their unique voices. I really found myself rooting for the characters and was very hooked and invested in the story and had much fun reading it. The ending was great and not too predictable - yet I still would love to read a Sequel to this, since there are some open questions in the end (which are likely left open on purpose). Big recommendation if you need a quick read on a train etc. (The e-book is included in Kindle Unlimited and otherwise really cheap and you can get the audio book for free as well!)
