Editorial Reviews
* FIRST TIME EVER ON LP * LIMITED EDITION CLEAR VINYL - ONLY 1000 UNITS PRESSED * COMPACT DISC BACK IN PRINT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 10 YEARS - Now On 8 Panel Digi-Pak * FINAL SMITHEREENS ALBUM WITH ORIGINAL LEAD SINGER PAT DiNIZIO * PRODUCED BY DON DIXEN (REM, GIN BLOSSOMS, MARSHALL CRENSHAW) “Crushing chronic chords with the dyne-rhythm section to fuel it all, are not only still here, but stronger than ever”. No Depression "Everything in Smithereens' world is like a film noir shot in psychedelic colors. But this New Jersey band has a talent for creating fresh variations that prevent dust or mist from clouding their music. "Smithereens 2011" reaches a peak with the song that opens the album, the sour-tempered yet utterly transporting "Sorry.” Ken Tucker, NPR "Wholly satisfying blast of classic Smithereens songcraft and melodicism, colored with Pat DiNizio’s impassioned vocals, Jim Babjak’s thick-toned, stinging guitar, Dennis Diken’s imaginative, powerful drum work and Severo “The Thrilla” Jornacion’s stylish bass. The entire collection sounds like a return to The Smithereens’ mid-to-late ’80s glory years, both song and performance-wise.” GOLDMINE MAGAZINE “And 2011’s songs – the songs! – vintage! - Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025The Smithereens never disappoint! Great album !
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2025Outstanding effort from one of my all time favorite bands and one of my favorite singers. I’m beyond thrilled to finally have this on vinyl!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2011This is a landmark album. I will be shocked if one or more of the singles aren't getting national air play. At first listen, I thought it was good - not remarkable. However, after listening to it half-a-dozen times, I am just blown away by the depth, complexity and most of all how everything (voice, chorus, guitars, instruments) just comes together to form something astonishing.
I thought about that - why that would be - the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. I think because it is an album true to their roots. Read the original Smithereens profile from back-in-the-day; "dressed in leather, brandishing heavy guitars." Well, maybe not dressed in leather, but back to how the band described itself - that's what this album is. I have listened to nothing else for the last week. That takes me back to my younger days: eagerly anticipating a new record by your favorite artist and then just playing it and playing it. This is like that.
And speaking of taking you back; there is the crunchy guitars and catchy lyrics, tied to everyday events that made the band famous. It's all there. In particular, Goodnight, Goodbye with its haunting chorus (I'll be there to follow you down) - tell me that does not take you back to some point in your life that has meaning for you - maybe a failed romance. And that is what this band has always done for me; takes me somewhere.
If you listen closely, you can hear all the band members at various points - in different choruses. And, in terms of instruments - good grief, very strong performances on guitar, bass and drums. One of the other things that really does it for me on this album is the guitar work. Again, on Goodnight, Goodbye, the guitar work is everything you expect from Jim Babjak - and more. As good as any other Smithereens record - it's that good.
Yes, I am a fan, but I am astonished how good this record is.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2025It’s the Smithereens! Should be more than 5 stars! The Smithereens rock
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2011Pat, Jim, Dennis and "The Thrilla" take their classic sound, add even more The Who(drums), Beatles(bass) and Beach Boys(harmony and backing vocal) to the mix, and come out with another great Smithereens CD. The Don Dixon production is stellar as usual, the songwriting is strong and the melodies stay with you. This is the Cd that longtime Smithereens fans (like myself) have been waiting for!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2012What a fool! I own every track/video/cd I could find of the Smithereens and enjoy everyone for it's flat out rock fun. Yet I waited to buy this new CD over a year from it's release despite hearing catchy samples. Decided to buy it just this week and it's been on my Droid, computer and car player every moment since! Virtually every song is catchy and has been named here in other reviews as great. The reviews are right. Yet they missed my two favorites so far "All The Same" and "Bring Back The One I Love". I loved the "11" and "Blow Up" albums with the strong Beatles influence and these hark back to that as well as the forever classic "Especially For You" and "Green Thoughts" Don Dixon masterpieces of simple rock as it should be played.
I'm heading to NYC in August 2012 to see/hear them live again (I've enjoyed over 40+ live shows in the past) and can't wait. Why I ignored this gem for a year is a mystery to me - don't do the same. Get it NOW!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2025Be sure to peruse the list of songs. This did not have the Smithereens best known hits.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2011I'm a casual fan of the Smithereens, which means I have the classic "11" cd. This new collection is a great companion piece to that album. Lots of the punchy guitar riffs for which the 'reens are quite famous, great vocals, and songs that are bound to become roadtrip singalong standards.
If you liked "11", you'll like "2011".
