Purchase options and add-ons
A gentle story that teaches how small acts of kindness can help children feel included and allow them to flourish, from esteemed author and speaker Trudy Ludwig and acclaimed illustrator Patrice Barton.
A simple act of kindness can transform an invisible boy into a friend...
Meet Brian, the invisible boy. Nobody in class ever seems to notice him or think to include him in their group, game, or birthday party . . . until, that is, a new kid comes to class.
When Justin, the new boy, arrives, Brian is the first to make him feel welcome. And when Brian and Justin team up to work on a class project together, Brian finds a way to shine.
Any parent, teacher, or counselor looking for material that sensitively addresses the needs of quieter children will find The Invisible Boy a valuable and important resource. Includes a discussion guide and resources for further reading.

"This is a simple yet heartfelt story.” —School Library Journal, starred review
"Tender illustrations rendered in glowing hues capture Brian’s isolation deftly...Accessible, reassuring and hopeful." —Kirkus Reviews
"Ludwig and Barton understand classroom dynamics...They portray Brian’s situation as a matter of groupthink that can be rebooted through small steps. It’s a smart strategy, one that can be leveraged through the book’s excellent discussion guide."
—Publishers Weekly
"Trudy Ludwig has given us the gift of another empathic, poignant book for children that addresses the complex topic of peer relationships...A must-read."

About the authors
My artistic talents were first discovered at the age of three, when I was found creating a mural on the dining room wall with a pastry brush and a can of Crisco. Although the work itself was never fully appreciated by my parents, my interest in art was. They quickly gave me a better canvas and more appropriate supplies. My passion for art grew, and I earned a BFA in studio art from the University of Texas in Austin, where I live now with my husband, son and good dog Archer.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2024Must have for any classroom or child’s library! This book has such an important message that every child must learn but it is written in a way that is engaging and on their level.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2020I love so many things about this book, but one thing I particularly appreciate is how she shows minority students as normal kids. I understand that there need to be books about kids with family from China and their unique Chinese-American struggles, but there also need to be books about Asian-American kids who are just regular kids. I also appreciate that the Asian kid in this story is not "The Asian Kid" in the way that so much media portrays them: geeky, recently immigrated, the sidekick, quiet, passive, etc. Nothing wrong with those traits-- it's just that we need to show more characteristics than JUST those. I appreciate seeing an Asian kid as a normal, confident, considerate, and thoughtful leader who can both be a regular American kid while being proud of his ethnic background.
The symbolism with the color was also very touching! Loved the illustrations and artwork, and have been recommending this book to my friends! If I were still teaching in the classroom, it would be one of the books I kept on display all year!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2024You can listen to the story on You Tube if you need convincing that this is a fabulous story, offering lots of opportunities for both social/emotional development and reading strategies. There are opportunities to predict, infer, synthesize, summarize and make connections.
Even though I SWORE that I would no longer buy any children's books upon retirement from the classroom, I purchased this one to use as a demonstration of an interactive read aloud for my college students.
Highly, highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2023I love this book. I hope it gets to be a classic one of these days. It's all about a quiet little boy who is ignored by his classmates and even his teacher. The creative use of color by the illustrator as the story goes on lends this book to great discussions about reality vs. fantasy--"Is the little boy really invisible?" what it means to be invisible and how we treat each other. Every time I read it to classrooms in K-4, I get quite the emotional responses from kids, and they are captivated by this story. It's beautifully written and illustrated. (Retired special ed teacher)

- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2024Important class discussion at the end of kindergarten! Many students didn’t understand that he was not actually invisible the whole time, but some more mature students did. The story lead to great discussions!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2024One of the best read alouds for my class but book came damaged.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2025I loved how this little boy, who was usually excluded from games and such made anew kid feel welcomed right from the beginning. Also, when another child tried to engage the new kid in play, the new kid didn't forget the kindness the "invisible" boy showed him, and wanted to include him before he agreed to go with the other child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book. Great positive story for Preschoolers & older kids
This is an enchanting book with a lovely message of hope for children who are shy & nervous in a new school. Brian is a boy who feels like he's invisible because his classmates don't pick him to play games or sit next to him at mealtimes. He escapes to his talented drawings. A new boy comes to the school. He hopes he can become his friend. The new boy also initially has issues with the cool class. The author cleverly resolves the issues of both boys. I love the way the author simply, depicts the "invisible boy" in the illustrations. The positive & subtle message of the book was picked up by 4 yr olds. They enjoyed it & requested re reads. Great concept & useful preparation for starting school.
Really interesting to see the author portray a child that feels isolated in such an easy to understand way for children. Would be a good book for bullies & victims because of the empathy it may generate. Sadly children can be affected by these feelings from nursery to reception & later. Good, positive ending. Hope to see more from this talented author & illustrator.
