Kitten's First Full Moon Board Book: A Caldecott Award Winner Board book – Illustrated, September 15, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
Kevin Henkes's acclaimed national bestseller about a kitten, the moon, and a bowl of milk was awarded the Caldecott Medal and was a New York Times Best Illustrated Book. This sturdy board book edition is perfect for little hands!
Kitten's First Full Moon is an acclaimed modern classic, from one of the most celebrated and beloved picture book creators working in the field today. This memorable character and her suspenseful adventure are just right for the very youngest child. It is Kitten's first full moon, and when she sees it she thinks it is a bowl of milk in the sky. And she wants it. Does she get it? Well, no . . . and yes. What a night!
A concise story, large type, and luminescent pictures play second fiddle to the true star of this book: a brave young kitten who sets out into the world on a quest that leaves her bruised, bewildered, and hungry, but that ultimately leads her back home, where something special is waiting just for her. This perfectly sized board book edition introduces Kitten to a new generation of the youngest readers.
Indefatigable Kitten is a role model for all ages—taking chances, picking herself up when she fails, trying out new strategies to get what she wants, and figuring out when enough is enough.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2024Format: Board bookVerified PurchaseAs a former early childhood teacher and later professor, I used this book with many small children. It is a sweet story and the art is extraordinar. Parents, look for Caldecott (early childhood) and Newbery (older children) winners for highly recommended children's literature.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2020Format: Board bookVerified PurchaseSmall kids will be mildly anxious then relieved that the kitten gets his bowl of milk in the end. For the very young, the book is printed on heavy, layered cardstock, more than an 1/8 inch thick for each page, so read it every night, it will last through several siblings
The prose is very simple and short with repetitions to help beginning readers to easily associate sounds to word shape as well as encouraging the narrator to use a sing song voice. Studies show that babies learn language faster when spoken to in simplified "baby talk" so a nightly story as simple as this one is a great book for 1-2 year old while older siblings may learn what the word "milk" looks like.
It is black and white throughout, just like our vision at night but the drawings were detailed enough to still be interesting. Somehow, without the stimulation of bright colors, the book seems even more restful, making it an excellent bedtime wind-down.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2022Format: Board bookVerified PurchaseI first read this book to my oldest, now almost 12, and it was the first book she ever read herself. We borrowed it from the library. She loved it, so I bought it for my youngest when she was 2. Now 6 she loves this book and it's a favorite bedtime story. She is past the reading level of the book, but she loves the antics of the kitten because it reminds her of her cat. I'm pretty sure we'll always have a soft spot for this one.
Over 4 years the book had held up well considering how much it's read to my youngest and yes, her cat (who sits through every reading like it's never heard the story.)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis was our second Henkes book. It's similar to the first, "Waiting," in pretty much every way. It's got a clever concept, nice drawings, functional writing, but is basically just kinda soft and insipid over all. No edge or depth to speak of. Just a sweet, wholesome children's book with no balls. My kid likes it okay, and I'm not saying it isn't good. I'm just saying that it lacks the edge you find in Sendak, Seuss, and Klassen, among others.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2015Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is my daughter's favorite book. At 8 months old my daughter's three most favorite things were kitty, milky and the moon-- so this book was an instant hit. I worried that black and white would be boring for her, but the illustrations are so beautiful and full of contrast our entire family loves to read it and look at it, day after day. The book is an adventure type, so reading it is never dull. She is 23 months now and remembers the words in the book and acts out each scene. Super cute!
As an additional bonus, this book helped me wean her at 21 months. Prior to weaning, this has been a book that was read prior to her passionate and highly anticipated -- evening mama milky sessions. Kitty is her hero, so realization that he/she is drinking from the bowl, has drastically changed her motivation. She went from wanting, what was familiar to wanting what was cool. After attempting to drink from the soup bowl she moved on to the very tall bowl --cup. Highly recommended and surprised this book doesn't have 400 or more five star reviews.
