NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM WARNER BROTHERS PICTURES * “Reads like Apollo 13 underwater.” —Don Winslow * “Masterful.” —Patricia Cornwell * “A stunningly vivid tour de force!” Gripping. Shocking.” —Brad Thor

Flight attendant turned New York Times bestselling author T. J. Newman’s adrenaline-fueled thriller about a commercial jetliner that crashes into the ocean and sinks to the bottom with passengers trapped inside—and the extraordinary rescue operation to save them.

Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Those still alive are forced to close the doors—but it’s too late. The plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers trapped inside.

More than two hundred feet below the surface, engineer Will Kent and his eleven-year-old daughter Shannon are waist-deep in water and fighting for their lives.

Their only chance at survival is an elite rescue team on the surface led by professional diver Chris Kent—Shannon’s mother and Will’s soon-to-be ex-wife—who must work together with Will to find a way to save their daughter and rescue the passengers from the sealed airplane, which is now teetering on the edge of an undersea cliff.

There’s not much time. There’s even less air.

With devastating emotional power and heart-stopping suspense,
Drowning is an unforgettable thriller about a family’s desperate fight to save themselves and the people trapped with them—against impossible odds.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of June 2023: The author of Falling returns with another dose of aviation anxiety in this nail-biting, emotional rollercoaster. It’s bad enough to be a passenger on a plane that has to make an emergency landing on water. Now imagine a scenario where all but a dozen passengers make it down that yellow slide before the plane doors have to be sealed shut again. Then imagine the plane starting to sink to the ocean floor. Fans of high-stakes disaster movies will recognize familiar beats: plucky passengers ranging from the very young to the elderly, a perplexed rescue team under pressure, forced to innovate on the fly when faced with a seemingly impossible rescue. But what we loved about Drowning is that it’s equal parts heart and heroics: once readers get sucked in by the emotional heft of the story, nothing will stop them from sticking the landing. Put your seats and tray tables in the upright position, fasten your seat belts, and pop a Dramamine. —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Editor

Drowning by T.J. Newman 4.5/5 ⭐️ Flight 1421 takes off from Honolulu. Six minutes later the nightmare begins! The engine explodes, and the plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean. As the passengers try to evacuate, conditions worsen and they close the doors. Now trapped inside, the plane begins to sink. It falls to a depth of over 200 ft and hinges on the edge of a cliff. Will, an engineer, and his daughter, Shannon, are among the other 10 passengers desperately fighting to stay alive. An elite rescue team is their only hope of surviving and returning to the surface. On this team is a diver who has a lot at stake. Chris is determined to save Will and Shannon, her husband and daughter. Can they pull off this massive rescue operation before time and oxygen run out? Will all the passengers make it out alive? This book was a wild ride! I was on the edge of my seat and pacing at times reading this book. With the recent news stories of Titan Oceangate and the fires in Hawaii, I had to remind myself I was reading was fiction. The characters' backstories and emotions gave the suspenseful plot a personal touch. I adored the elderly couple’s unconditional love story wedged into the action. Although, I would get lost and confused in some of the technical stuff. If you are looking for an adrenaline-pumping, fast-paced, page-turner this is your book!

5 days and all 3 books by this author have been "consumed". That says a lot because not only I loved each book, but I couldn't get enough of them. Did not need any break, did not want to take my mind off the books, I wanted more. I still do! Drowning was great! I think Worse Case Scenario is my favorite, then Drowning, and then Falling. This book is terrific. Gut-wrenching and suspenseful, a real page-turner. I took off one star

    [SPOILER ALERT]

because at the very end there’s a king drawn-out passage when one of the main characters dies and is reunited with her previously-deceased young daughter. Then a few pages later, literally the last page, that character is alive again and with her family — with no explanation whatsoever.

Drowning, is the latest, captivating release from T. J. Newman. This spell-binding story is tight with tension, filled with emotion, horrifying heartbreak, quieter moments of recollections, introspection, and the bonds created through shared experiences.

This is a fast-paced, enthralling read that you dread reading, but can’t seem to put down. There is a lot of research and technical jargon, that admittedly, I skimmed over a bit, but added veracity and credibility to the story. It’s action-packed and fast-paced, but also has a deeper, more thoughtful aspect to it.

In Drowning, we follow the tragic and mind-boggling crash of flight 1421 minutes after it leaves Honolulu. In the impending aftermath, we experience the panic, decision-making, rage, and terror of those who survive the crash. Some choose to leave the plane, and some do not. The plot focuses on those stuck within the plane, the trajectory from that choice and the efforts to save them. We get rather detailed backstories into some of the characters which creates an emotional connection to them, and join in on the camaraderie that is experienced through shared tragedy.

The author is not afraid to throw her punches, sacrifice her characters and go to necessary extremes. Her writing-style is immersive and places you on the plane with the characters themselves. You feel their desperation, their panic, their resilience, and their determination. Though I didn’t love it quite as much as Falling, her first novel, Drowning is still an uputdownable thriller and one that will make your pulse-pound and keep you on the edge of your seat!

Have you ever read a book and you can see it playing out scene by scene on the big screen? T. J. Newman has a knack for delivering fiction that plays like a blockbuster movie. It's no surprise this book (and her first outstanding novel, Falling) are already slated for Hollywood. Well deserved, I say.

This is nail-biting, tension-filled, nerve-wracking fiction that blisters from page one all the way through to the final conclusion. Yeah, some of the characters come off a wee bit stereotypical---the selfish jerk, the sweet older couple, and even the eleven-year-old who acts more adult then some of the adults around her---but so what? When you've got a fantastic popcorn-type novel that keeps you glued to every moment, you got with the flow and enjoy the ride. And what a ride it is!

When a jet is forced to "ditch" in the Pacific shortly after takeoff, eventually sinking to the bottom of the ocean, it's a race to rescue the passengers trapped on board before their air runs out. With back-and-forth scenes between the passengers struggling to survive and the rescue workers racing against time, this is mostly a plot-driven, high octane novel, but it also carries personal stories and deeper character relationships. This is a disaster movie in print, a guilty pleasure, and well worth a fantastic five stars. I can't wait for the movie. T.J. Newman has become an auto-buy author for me!

Okay. So is this book a page turner? Yes. Cheesy and cornball. Check. Having now read both of TJ's books, I feel empty. Not that she can't engage the reader, but it's all surface. Characterizations are soap opera 101. She knows her stuff when it comes to airline procedures (having once been a flight attendant) but her grasp on human drama is thinly basic. "Drowning" is an improvement on "Falling" when it comes to ham-fisted dialogue, but the biggest drawback here is the over attention to physical action. 80 percent of the prose is this happens, than this happens, and not much of it is all that thrilling or even engaging. The characters from Kit the pilot to Andy the requisite jerk, are paper thin and flat out dull. Don't get me started on Will the bland hero of 100 leagues under the sea. She has a bestseller on her hands, but when it's all said and done - you won't remember any of it.

This book was very well written. I loved it and gave it 4 stars. I probably would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't been for the so much back and forth between too many points of view in the beginning. It got confusing sometimes trying to keep track of who was who. But there were fewer points of view as the book went on, and I ended up really enjoying it.

This author's writing is sharp and the story is compelling and intense. T.J Newman’s ability to make the reader visualize every scene is a rare talent and one she hones to perfection.I was on the edge of my seat throughput the storyline. Being a former flight attendant.I sympathize with the crew and passengers and everyone involved with the rescue. T.J. Newman being a former flight attendant herself for Virgin America Airlines and her extensive research helped make the book that much more believable. I was hooked right from the beginning right up to the satisfying ending .The intensity is non-stop. So be prepared for a rollercoaster of a ride intensity and emotions.

Will Kent and his daughter, eleven-year-old Shannon, are on Flight 1421 heading to San Francisco from Honolulu. After only being airborne for less than two minutes the engine explodes, and they also lose all there hydraulics the plane was dead in the air. Captain Miller and his co-pilot Kit Callahan are left with the only option for ditch landing (make a landing in the ocean). As the passengers are ordered to evacuate the airplane chaos ensues. Most of the passengers evacuate, but three crew members and nine passengers including Will and his daughter are trapped on board as the plane sinks, 200ft. below sea level than abruptly comes to a stop balancing precariously on a rock bed.

The are many characters in the storyline. The main characters and secondary characters were well developed some you would want to befriend and some you’d loath as they handle this terrifying catastrophe in the air. That ends below the ocean. You cold feel their fear and anxiety it was palpable. As they try to find hope in the situation that they have onboard Will Kent that takes charge of the situation with Kit the acting captain with their combined knowledge they try to devise a plan that will help them get out alive

Will, as an engineer, knows just how dire the situation is. Shannon shows a strength of spirit that is rare in an eleven-year-old and puts some of the adults to shame.
They are trapped and they have to face what led them to this point and Will vows to fix his family, if he can get them out of this disaster.

On the surface, Coast Guard, Navy and a private contractor crew are working to find a way to save those trapped in the plane. Chris, is the owner of the civilian contractor company that does under water welding on navy ships and no one has more to lose than she does. As Will and Chris work together with the navy and coast guard to save the people trapped in the airplane, the coast guard have implemented two failed rescue attempts already that ended with tragedy, Engineer Will while calming his preteen daughter realizes the odds are against them but there is hope in the genius brain of his estranged wife Chris; if only those in charge would listen to her. Both Will and Chris realize that what happened to their family before the plane crash was tragic, but the real tragedy is that they let it destroy their family.

The brilliance of this story is in the creative interweaving of the lives of those hanging in the balance. We learn about the special love of elderly couple Ira and Ruth and background on the other passengers and crew.

The tragedy leading to the separation of Will and Chris Kent is gut wrenching but the fierceness to save their daughter and each other is a testament of their love and the pain that tried to break it. I believe it added depth to the storyline.

Non stop action, plausible plot, well written characters. I'll be lining up for the next book by this author.

Once again, T J Newman comes up with a rollercoaster ride of suspense in her new book. Imagine a dozen of people trapped in an aeroplane that has drowned in the Ocean, with oxygen supply slowly getting exhausted. The hopes of survival are dwindling. And the rescue team above the Ocean's surface has no experience of pulling out an Aircraft from underwater!

5.0 out of 5 stars Okay, let me just prepare you by saying this book is absolutely amazing!

Okay, let me just prepare you by saying this book is absolutely amazing!

I could just leave the review there. But I'll give you a bit more detail.

What I like about a T.J Newman book is that you're thrown into it from the very first word. There's no preamble. It's very clear that you're in a thriller and you're in it for the long ride.

I was crying by page 14. I don't know if it was the content or the beauty of the writing, but it really moved me more than I expected. I even had to stop reading for a bit. I can't even explain it. Why it moved me so much. I don't usually cry at thrillers, but this had such a heart that it was impossible not to.

I hate flying at the best of times, always have. I found Falling okay to read because the chance of an aviation terrorist attack is, thankfully, low. But a plane crashing? Into the sea? Being stuck in what is essentially a large tin can? That seems more feasible and that's a definite no no.

I would say probably don't read it if you've got a plane trip booked soon, or if you're claustrophobic, or if you suffer from submechanophobia - the fear of manmade objects under water.

Whilst I hope that she didn't have experience of exactly this situation, you can tell Newman has knowledge of planes. Everything to the last detail is considered. I mean, I know nothing about planes so she could be making it all up, but it feels so tangible and real that it can't be anything other than real.

There's a bit more technical jargon in this one than in Falling, if my memory serves me well. That could have made it unfriendly and difficult to read. But it somehow worked. I didn't always understand every technical aspect but it didn't matter. It flowed so well into the story that you just understood it and it helped you value the main plot points. And that takes some precision balance.

The entire book - bar the occasional flashback - is set over a few hours. It takes an incredible writer to get that pacing right. To have enough to fill 300 pages, but to also make it quick and thrilling and not bogged down with detail. I can only applaud her.

For me, this packs a serious punch. Not only is it thrilling and scary and all of those things that we want, it is unbelievably emotional and moving and touching. I can't think of another in this genre that has made me cry as much, or given me such a lump in my throat, as this one.

There are some fabulous characters. After the event, we're left with about a dozen of them. Crew and passengers, the elderly and the tiny, the mums and dads, grandparents, husbands, children, friends. And they're all wonderfully created. They're not all pleasant, I will say that, but brilliantly written and developed. I think every reader will be able to identify with at least one of them and put themselves in their very wet shoes.

I've seen the odd reviewer ask if Newman will branch out and write non-plane related stories. But I don't think that's an issue because they're so different. And there's a heart and a soul and a passion behind every word. Whether she chooses to write another 10 plane-set thrillers, or goes off-piste for the next one, I don't care. Her writing is spectacular and I'll read it no matter what form it comes.
