Things We Never Got Over (Knockemout Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 224,479 ratings

Bearded, bad-boy barber Knox prefers to live his life the way he takes his coffee: Alone. Unless you count his basset hound, Waylon.

Knox doesn’t tolerate drama, even when it comes in the form of a stranded runaway bride.

Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Usually in that order.

Too bad for Naomi her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. The niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.

There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.

At least, that’s the plan until the trouble turns to real danger.

I cannot make you understand how absolutely refreshing this book is.
I read a lot of romance. I love the genre. I love the lack of pretension in the genre as a whole. Most romance novels don’t try to be anything other than a trope-y mess of a good time - and that’s amazing! It’s why we all read the same, like, 9 stories in different fonts.
But this one? This one was beautiful and heartfelt and so genuine. There was love poured into every single character, even the ones we only meet once! The male lead was respectful and even - rightfully so - a little fearful and a lot in awe of the women in his life! The female lead was flawed and amazing and genuinely funny! She didn’t need to be less for anyone! Every single character was charming and/or engaging! And as the kid who had to be self sufficient and perfect to ‘make up’ for a sibling I felt so damn seen.
As a voracious consumer of romance novels since the tender age of sixteen I can say with honesty that I did not roll my eyes a single time while reading this book and I can give no higher compliment than that.
(I did however laugh out loud, swear ferociously, and sob at varying points. I also have gave myself a backache from reading this in one day - I should have taken a break and stretched.)

Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score had me hooked from the very start! This book delivers a fantastic mix of small-town charm, swoon-worthy romance, and just the right amount of drama. Naomi, a runaway bride with a heart of gold, finds herself stranded in a town that isn’t exactly welcoming—especially after her estranged twin steals her car, money, and leaves behind an 11-year-old niece Naomi never knew existed.

Enter Knox, the grumpy yet irresistibly helpful neighbor who wants nothing more than to stay out of Naomi’s chaos—but somehow, he keeps getting pulled back in. Their dynamic is full of tension, heartfelt moments, and plenty of “you idiot” moments that had me completely invested in their journey.

With a mix of humor, slow-burn romance, and some high-stakes moments that kept me turning the pages, Things We Never Got Over was such a satisfying read. And that ending? Perfection—I love when a book keeps me on edge until the very last moment. Highly recommend this one for anyone who loves small-town romance with a bit of an edge

This book has a little bit for everyone. It started out and I thought perhaps this would be a suspense, but then as I kept reading it reminded me of something that should be turned into a Hallmark movie. Further into the book it turned into an X rated book with obscene language and detailed sex. The story was very good and although it had some sad pages it also had a fairy tale ending. I couldn't put the book down.

I think we can all relate to this book. There are things that happen in our lives that we swear we will never get over. We all have struggles and disappointments. We all want someone to love us enough to be there through it all. I loved watching Naomi teach Knox how to grow past loss and disappointment and to realize that it was possible that the right person would stay and love you through it all. You could save one another day after day. What a wonderful book!

I never knew how much I needed this book. I saw the title, the cover and authors name plenty of times. Never thought to read. Thank you Goodreads for having this as a suggestion. I enjoyed this story. I wished it didn’t have to end. No slow starts or slow parts. Captivating from the beginning. I’m reading all your books Lucy Score. Officially in my top 3.

I read Story of my Life prior to this and was eager to read another summer romance because I loved it so much. Things We Never Got Over was good, but not great. If I hadn’t read these back to back, I may feel differently but the male main characters are so much alike. Campbell and Knox read exactly the same personality wise. The female leads are different enough but too many other aspects are similar, including the characters family dramas and former relationships. Also, this book has some super cheesy lines. Good, just not great.

This story starts with Naomi having what could best be called an all-time, worst day ever. She's a runaway bride, her twin sister called her frantically for help, only to steal her car, money, and clothes, and then surprise her by caring for her 11-year-old niece, whom she didn't even know existed. And on top of that, everyone in town keeps telling her she's unwelcome. And then a brooding, Viking of a man keeps yelling at her. So it's a pretty rough day.

That might sound like this story is over-the-top full of tropes, but it's not. This story follows a light enemies-to-lovers trope. Knox Morgan hates Naomi Witt almost as much as he's attracted to her. But yet he keeps finding himself helping her. Naomi won't deny she's attracted to Knox, but she doesn't get why he hates her. But she doesn't have time to worry about that. She's frantically trying to earn money and also attempting to care for an 11-year-old.

I was unsure about this story because of the parenting aspect, but if you're on the fence like me, you should give this a try. Waylay is a precocious, intelligent, and clever young girl. It was heartwarming to see Naomi parent as best she can, and to see Waylay experience true kindness and consideration.

The bulk of the action of this story is in the back half. It does get pretty steamy, but it never felt like it overtook the story. The characters are well-developed and there are two other books in the Knockemout series that follow other future couples.

One of my favorite aspects of this story is that it follows middle-aged adults. Knox and Naomi are both grown adults who have experienced both the highs and lows of life. I think had I read this when I was younger, I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed it as much or related to Naomi so heavily. But now, as someone who is 40 years old, I really relate to her character and Knox.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a love story in a crazy (in a good way) small town with lots of heart, laughs, and maybe a few punches.
