What if you could take a vacation to your past?
With her celebrated humor, insight, and heart, beloved New York Times bestseller Emma Straub offers her own twist on traditional time travel tropes and a different kind of love story.
On the eve of her fortieth birthday, Alice’s life isn’t terrible. She likes her job, even if it isn’t exactly the one she expected. She’s happy with her apartment, her romantic status, and her independence, and she adores her lifelong best friend. But her father is ailing, and it feels to her as if something is missing. When she wakes up the next morning, she finds herself back in 1996, reliving her sixteenth birthday. But it isn’t just her adolescent body that shocks her, or seeing her high school crush—it’s her dad, the vital, charming, forty-something version of her father with whom she is reunited. Now armed with a new perspective on her own life and his, some past events take on new meaning. Is there anything that she would change if she could?

The surprise first twist was great, but honestly, I felt the book was moving along well before that point. I laughed, I cried. It's a fun read and I'll easily recommend it going forward.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2025I really enjoyed this book. The mixture of slight sci tropes and the focus on the relationship between Leonard and Alice really got me. As a native New Yorker, the reference points for UWS grounded and put a smile on my face. I also enjoyed the fact that Alice and Sam’s friendship never changed.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2022I'm a sucker for time travel lit, and after reading the sample and the reviews, ordered the book and polished it off in a couple of nights. It's a quick read.
The premise is intriguing, but the author's particular spin on time travel keeps protagonist Alice ping-ponging between two birthdays -- her 16th and her 40th -- hoping to do or say something on the earlier birthday that will result in a different (presumably better) 40th birthday. Here the reader encounters a couple of problems:
* Constraining the travel to such a narrow timeframe limits the opportunities for Alice to achieve anything enduring or meaningful. The reader has to suspend disbelief to accept that a single choice at a teenager's birthday party will irrevocably set the course for her future.
* Alice, though pleasant enough, comes across as a flat character. She's driven by her love for her father, but what else does she care about? If she has no particular aspirations for herself, how will she know when she's made enough tweaks (at age 16) so that she's happy at age 40? The book fails to answer the question.
Although the first third of the book kept me engaged, the remainder lacked energy and surprise. Time travel books generally excel in spooling out info about the protagonist -- the character arc evolves as we see the person moving through time -- but Alice never feels three-dimensional.
What I liked the most: the loving attention to NYC details. The street where Alice grew up, Pomander Walk, is a real place, and it was fun to look at the photos and read about the street's history.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2022This novel did not catch my interest instantly; but, after a few chapters of set-up, when the magic began, the novel really delivered. Time travel fantasies are common enough, and its predecessors are referenced throughout the book, but in this author’s hands that magic is a device, not to save the world, but to explore the ways in which the choices made by the central character, Alice, in a repeating single day, alter her future. Along the way, Alice, a thoughtful Everywoman with echoes from Lewis Carroll, learns both the limits of her ability to direct her future and what to value of the opportunities she, wittingly and unwittingly, creates. This is a novel of introspection, but there are other satisfactions here, novels within the novel, a crowd of SF/F authors in convention talking shop, the ever-present cat Ursula (of Le Guin), the setting in the vast and ever-evolving NYC, and a host of other delights. There is as well an emotional depth to the characters’ relationships that is uncommonly effective. Overall, a best seller of substance that is highly enjoyable. Like an earlier reviewer, I too learned of this book through a NYT review.

This quote from This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub REALLY resonated with me. Wow. I spend a LOT of time worrying about things in every day life, even though I know from a rational standpoint that worrying does nothing to help a situation. That being said, once you know about all the things that can go wrong in any given situation, how do you avoid the worry?
.
Now, on to the review...
.
Time travel books are my favorite. The Chronicles of St Mary's, Outlander, Oona Out of Order... just name to name a few - these books are my jam! This particular book delves into all the different time travel stories we are familiar with and how there are multiple ways to "time travel" within fiction. It kinda makes my head hurt, but that's also why I love exploring the idea of time travel; it is endlessly thought-provoking. When you alter the past, does it affect your future? Are there multiple lines of time (like in Dark Matter by Blake Crouch)? Can you drastically affect the future with one simple action (like in 11/22/63 by Stephen King)? I enjoyed this element in this novel, but I also felt like there were a few plot holes and things about the actual time travel that didn't really make sense. My advice to the reader: just go with it. You'll enjoy the book a lot more if you don't spend too much time trying to figure it out.
.
Another thing I really loved about this book: the main focus of the plot is on the father/daughter relationship. Alice and Leonard's relationship really tugged at my heartstrings. Being very close to my own dad, I felt I could really relate to what Alice went through seeing her dad age. Additionally, I think anyone would would take advantage of the ability to go back in time to see a loved one happy and healthy and in their prime. The emotion that Straub plants throughout the novel is subtle and really very beautiful.
.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I recommend for a reader who wants a more emotional, literary read and loves time travel!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2024This book brought together a number of things that have intrigued me my entire life. It got to me in a way that most books don’t, or can’t. Incredible plot, ideas, emotions, and life metaphors. I’m being vague, I know, because I don’t want to risk any spoilers. If you enjoy character-driven books about life and humanity, I highly recommend this novel. My thanks to Emma Straub … I raced to the end, even though I didn’t want it to end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Plus que décevant
J'ai acheté ce roman parce que j'avais aimé les autres livres d'Emma Straub - mais là, quelle déception. Insipide, ennuyeux... c'est un roman à l'eau de rose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching at the deepest level
First I wasn’t sure if the main character was my cupboard tea. After some time as the story picks up she really grew on me. The relationship with her dad, her friends and herself was really relatable to me and was understandable.
Sure - I could image a few things that would have made the plot mir interesting but in the end that was not the Point. She is finding out things and wants time with her dad. Time is sacred and a commodity at the same time.
I was devastated when the book was over.
I could have stayed there for weeks longer.
Thank you for the book, dear author.
