Secure fit and good bass, but annoying microphonics
HISTORYWhen I had to replace my long-time earbuds, I bought the DUNU Titan S after an analysis-paralysis level of research. The DUNU seemed well-built, but they were too tall and narrow for my outer ear canal and their unnatural music reproduction quickly fatigued my ears. Although I was able to return it for a full refund, I see that most sellers won't grant a full refund - especially for higher-priced buds. This is why I restarted my search at the lower end of the price spectrum in case I couldn't return future purchases. I purchased the KZ ZSN Pro. While it was wonderfully free of microphonics (see below), it was very similar to the DUNU in both fit and sound reproduction. Since it appeared that my ears are not a fit for Asian-designed ear buds – ironic, since I'm Asian – I next looked at domestic designs. After narrowing my search to JBL Endurance RUN (ER, henceforth) and Apple EarPods (EP, henceforth), I bought both for a comparison.WHICH DO I PREFER?–Fit: ERThe fit of EP is a mystery to me – there are no tips to tailor the fit and its surface is slippery. Is my outer ear canal so different than those of the millions of EP users? For me, gravity keeps EP in my ears when I'm upright, but gravity pulls them out when I'm lying down. It doesn't fit in any useful sense. It just sits inside my ear. ER, on the other hand, comes with three sizes of grippy silicone tips and makes and keeps a solid contact with my ear canal. Chewing can sometimes loosen ER's fit – if I'm being picky. I could buy hooks to give EP a better fit if I liked EP otherwise, but I don't. Fit is not just about comfort. Fit affects how the sound produced by the earbud drivers is delivered to our ear drums.–Sound: EREP lacks bass. That is mostly due to the driver and partially due to the fit. In higher-end IEM (in-ear monitors), tips are used to tailor the fit and, more importantly, to tailor bass. The ER's tips do change bass quality, with the smallest providing the leanest. ER's bass is not as deep or as accurate as my over-the-ear Sennheiser, but it is surprising and satisfying.–Microphonics: EPVibrations that reach our ear drums are converted by our brains into sound. These vibrations travel through solids, liquids, and gases (air). The more material that the vibration passes through, the more the vibration dissipates. This is how kids learned to tell whether a train was approaching by putting their ears on the train track. When an earbud cable rubs against our shirt or body part, the vibration that travels over the cable to the earbuds is known as microphonics. Wireless earbuds and over-the-ear headphones (insulation in their heavy cables restricts this vibration) have no to little microphonics. If an earbud cable has sufficient microphonics-cancelling material, however, it might be too bulky and the earbud might be prone to being pulled out of your ear with the weight and/or stiffness of the cable. (The KZ ZSN Pro compensates for its stiffness/bulk by having a preformed loop to secure it over your ears.) With budget earbuds like EP and ER, it's a matter of how much microphonics. In this comparison, EP is 50% quieter than ER. I found that wrapping ER's cable once around my ear reduces microphonics dramatically, however. This works because most of the vibration is intercepted by the flesh of my outer ear and scalp before it can reach the earbud. While wrapping the cable was a nice science experiment, I don't rely on it because this arrangement eventually loosens the fit of the buds during the listening session. Finally, because of microphonics, I won't be doing any physical activity while wearing ER – despite JBL's marketing claim. After the trial period, I kept the EP but now only use it with my phone because callers can hear me better through EP's microphone.

Completely surpassed my expectations. I bought these when they went on sale and got them for 15 bucks but even for the normal going rate of 20 dollars, these would be a steal. I think the sound quality is VERY nice, especially given the price range these fall into, and the stability in the ear is fantastic. Some earbuds fall out gradually over a listening session but I haven't had that issue even a little bit. Even when moving around a lot, these never moved. The ONLY gripe I would have about these is that the cord is a bit noisey. This really isn't noticable when music is playing, but it's worth mentioning that the cord is only so-so. Again this is my only gripe with these for the price so these are a great buy if you are considering them.

I can't believe the overall review on these earphones averages out to a 4.5. Maybe it's because athletes were expecting these to last forever, or have a tendency to do things that put a lot of stress on the cord, or it's ends, or they're getting tons of sweat or rain inside them.

My perspective on these, I've probably tried at least 20 different corded earphones, and I'm talking premium name brands, plus the same with earbuds and headphones. I guess you'd say I'm always on a quest for the best, and sometimes for the lowest cost. For $20, I think these are the best.

When I purchased these I wasn't expecting much. I've tried the JBL 110, JBL Live 100. For what they are, they're ok. I just did a side by side comparison with those, and these, playing specific songs I like, gave the best overall balance of tone, with much higher volume than those other JBL's, and enhanced dynamic presence on each song, as if I was hearing the song live in-concert. The drums and cymbals, the bass, the guitar, and the vocals, were all incredibly balanced, crystal clear with no distortion, incredibly present as if the band was right in front of me, and that was for studio recorded songs.

I think one of the biggest problems with earphones achieving all the above, is partially related to how well they seat deeply in your ear, and remain that way. Most earphones don't achieve that but these do, and they do it extremely well.

I had been thinking about these earphones for months, and kept talking myself out of buying them, due to the reviews for them only averaging out to 4.5, I typically won't buy anything on Amazon unless the review for it is over 4.5. Plus, I almost didn't buy these because I thought since they were for running, excercise and for active wear, that maybe the sound quality made certain sacrifices, compared to other JBL earphones. Not buying these would've been a huge mistake, they're not only the best sounding JBL earphones, they're the best earphones of any big name brand that I've ever tried, and I own some that cost way more than these. Now my plan is to order 2-3 more boxes of these, because JBL does have a tendency to stop making certain earphone models.

As for the grade I gave this, I'm giving these a 5.0, because for $20, the sound is incredible, so incredible, I would've been willing to pay at least $50 for them, and still been happy with my purchase, the sound quality is that good. I've spent a lots of name brand earphones and this $20 pair puts an end to my earphone tone quest, I'm getting more of them as back-ups

Now for the 4.5 reviews on here, and athletes or those that exercise and use these, I'm guessing with your phone in your pocket, and jumping up-and-down, twisting and turning, and putting stress on the ends of the cord of these, and stretching it out too far, or getting the inside of the earphones contantly wet with sweat or rain, yeah maybe they do stop working after a while, so what, they're only $20. If I was an athlete and purchased these for $20, and was exercising daily, and stressing and pulling on the ends of the cord, and drowning the inside of them with sweat or rain, and they stopped working after a few months, I wouldn't care if I had to buy another pair every few months, the sound the provide is incredible for $20. Stop whinning, suck it up and buy another pair if you're abusing the cord everyday. And if you're looking for something with a lifetime gurantee that's indestructible no-matter-what, and sounds this good for $20, please let me know when you find it.

So whether you exercise or not, I dare you try these and say the sound they provide isn't worth $20. And if you find a pair that does sound better for $20, please let me know.

Esse fone me surpreendeu.

Nice, clear, full sound for a reasonable price. Got these on a good sale before Christmas. Somewhat noise cancelling. Good quality and fit. Wires are a little thicker than some others I have had before. Hopefully they last a long time. Definitely recommend.
