- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2024Okay, so The Monster at the End of This Book is the BEST book ever! My kids and I read it together, and we were giggling the whole time. The best part? Grover, the lovable blue monster, is SUPER scared about the monster at the end of the book – and he tries EVERYTHING to stop us from turning the pages. Like, he begs, he pleads, and even builds walls to stop us. It's so funny because, let’s be honest, we all KNOW we’re going to turn those pages anyway (because who can resist?).
Grover’s reactions are hilarious, and the book keeps getting more ridiculous with every page. My kids were shouting, “Don’t turn the page!” and then laughing because we totally did turn the page anyway – because that’s what you do when there’s a mystery (and a monster) at the end!
Without giving too much away, let me just say that the "monster" at the end is... not what you expect. But that's what makes it SO much fun! This book is perfect for kids who love a little suspense and a lot of laughs. It’s silly, clever, and totally worth reading over and over (which we do, by the way). Highly recommend it for some hilarious bedtime reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2025I read this book many times to my son when he was a toddler. Now I am reading it every day, sometimes twice a day, to my 3 year old great granddaughter. She loves it and interacts with it. The story is great and Little Golden Books are always the best!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2024As a child psychoanalyst, parent and grandparent, I can't recommend this book strongly enough. It is so captivating, funny and reassuring. I will admit Grover has always been my favorite Sesame St. character. This is one of the 10 best selling Little Golden Books of all time. I like the larger format, but the smaller one is convenient for packing on a trip when a child might feel anxious sleeping in a new setting! Please run out and get this book and enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2024This is the all time classic, funny, interactive, read aloud when a little one is sitting right by you! Grover is scared because he heard there's a monster at the end of the book so he sets up ways to try to stop the reader from turning the pages, but of course you do, it get's more and more silly, until the very end he finds that the only monster at the end of the book is himself. It's not scary at all but very, silly, fun, and delightful read. It's adorable. Get ready to hear some giggles
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2024I do not know a young child who does not love this book! It is one of my very favorite go-to books to give as a gift. Four- and five-year-olds love it. Grover is afraid of a "monster" at the end of the book and on each page he tries to persuade the reader to stop turning pages. "This will stop you from turning pages!" he says, and he nails, ties, and bricks each page and then says "YOU TURNED THE PAGE!" after each page gets turned. The kids LOVE deciding to turn each page. At the end, Grover says "Well, look at that! I am the monster at the end of the book ..... and YOU were so scared". LOL.
It is a very fun, interactive book to read with kids.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2025This was my son's favorite book as a child. And now it's one of my granddaughter's too. So practice your best Grover voice and read it with gusto, your kids will love it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2025Perfect for a three or four year-old who’s into monsters or afraid of monsters if they are aware of Sesame Street, then they know monsters can be friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2013I believe a lot of people can cite "The Monster At the End of This Book" as one of the first books they remember reading as a child. Not only because it featured a beloved character from a TV show many children grew up watching, but because it was probably their first exposure to an interactive story -- instead of simply reading a pre-written tale, children felt they were interacting with Grover himself, and that their actions affected the story itself. Before this book, not many children's books experimented with breaking the fourth wall and addressing the reader directly, and in this sense "Monster" was ahead of its time.
I recently purchased this book for a friend's baby shower gift, and she, too, said it was one of her absolute favorite books as a child and she was eager to share it with her own son when he was old enough. It's heartening to know that a simple children's book can be so beloved by all ages.
As stated before, what makes "Monster" unique is that it's main character, Grover, is fully aware that he's in a book, and tries to tell the reader to not turn the pages -- because the further you read, the closer you get to the end of the book, where supposedly a monster lurks. Grover pleads with the reader, and even resorts to increasingly silly methods to keep the reader from turning the pages. There's even a bit of suspense built up as Grover's fear builds with every page turned, and one can't help but feel a little sorry for him. Naturally, I won't spoil the ending, and I doubt any reader, no matter the age, is going to stop reading to the very end despite all Grover's best efforts.
Also, the art bears mention -- it's a loose and sketchy style, in contrast with the later Sesame Street books that would have relatively crisp and clean artwork, and very few of the pages have actual backgrounds. But I actually rather liked it as a kid, and I still like it now. The story is very simple and no-frills, and so the artwork is made to match. Also, it's nice to have a unique art style in a TV-spinoff book, where most books based on a TV show have generic-looking "canned art" instead of much in the way of creativity.
A fun and unique read for young children, this is a must for any child's library. Young readers will enjoy feeling that they have control over the story, and giggling along to Grover's antics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Amazon. Thank you Sesame Street.
The smile on our toddlers face everytime she is about to read this book is priceless. There is a page where Grover is particularly distressed (because you turned the page!) to which our toddler always reacts and laughs out loud! The book has a simple story, and is not too long or too short. It also has a great ending.
An amazing book at any price, but if you can get it for less than $10, just buy it if you are on the fence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Divertido. Simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Was lange währt
Vielen Dank

3.0 out of 5 stars Esperava mais
Vi várias avaliações positivas do livro e realmente é bem engraçado, mas a estória é bem curta. Como meu filho tem 6 anos, curte historias mais complexas. Mas é bem engraçado

5.0 out of 5 stars My all time favourite book (even now at 35)
This was my favourite book growing up and I have no doubt my daughter will love it just as much. Even reading it now as an adult (of course getting very very animated as Grover would) I find myself laughing as i go. It is so sweet and funny and I cannot imagine anyone regretting purchasing this book.
I actually buy this and "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly" as birthday/christmas/just because gifts for friends with young children.
