Sand bare wood in the direction of the grain
Start with #120 grit sandpaper and progress through #150, #180 and #220 grits

I did this, and there was virtually no color change. So I left it on overnight and never wiped any of it off and got this gorgeous dark brown table that has a glossy finish.

I've since purchased polyurathane and intend to seal it, but 3 days in (so far) and it looks great! I even had some friends over for dinner and we used glasses sans coasters and the wood/varnish remained 100% in tact.

LOVE the way this turned out! Also, happy I could get the HALF pint as it's all I needed for the project.

Seems concentrated. Lots of pigment. Goes on very dark, even when wiping excess immediately instead of waiting up to 5 minutes. If you don’t want the wood to absorb that much, I recommend using this brand’s pre-stain wood conditioner. Absorption likely depends on the wood, also.
One of the 5 colors looked like a return. Lock clips were missing from top of can. That one came sealed in a plastic bag, and there were dried stains around the lid. Also, that can was a little less full compared to the other 4 colors. We didn’t need much, so it was fine for us.
We used em on several different smaller projects and are reasonably happy with all the results. The Amazon prices are reasonable compared to local stores, and the color selection / availability was decent. Would recommend.
