Purchase options and add-ons
A mouse is taking a stroll through the deep, dark wood when along comes a hungry fox, then an owl, and then a snake. The mouse is good enough to eat but smart enough to know this, so he invents . . . the gruffalo! As Mouse explains, the gruffalo is a creature with terrible claws, and terrible tusks in its terrible jaws, and knobbly knees and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of its nose. But Mouse has no worry to show. After all, there’s no such thing as a gruffalo. . . .

- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025I love this book. My first purchase was for my 3 year old granddaughter. She loved the book and always asked that I read it to her. When she was 3 years old, she read the book to us. I was amazed and was sure she had memorized it from so many readings. I decided to test her by opening it and choosing different pages.....she still read it perfectly. A genius....no,but I am certain this wonderful book was instrumental in teaching her to read. She is now a special needs teacher and has a copy of the book for her classroom. Her students enjoy the book and ask for it to be read daily.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2024I had heard of the gruffalo while we were living in England and actually purchased a DVD of the story. It is such a cute story that I wanted my grandchildren to also have the book. They love it!! It is a great story and the illustrations are wonderful. This should be a classic that you should be added to every parent or grandparent's library.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024This book is so wonderfully written and fun to read! My 6 year old daughter loved the story. The first time reading it through I did have to explain to her the “trick” the mouse was doing to each of the animals and then how that trick helped the mouse then also trick the Gruffalo. I just loved how this story was told and how by using intelligence you can get ahead of even the most powerful of creatures!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2025Julia Donaldson is amazing, the Gruffalo is definitely one of our favorite books! So cute. We read it often.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025Never heard of it til my boyfriend said to get it. Good story
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2015Summary: It's a wonderful story about a little brown Mouse taking a walk through a deep dark wood and not getting eaten by bigger animals by convincing them of the existence of a terrible creature, the Gruffalo. All is going well for our Mouse, until he meets the Gruffalo face to face! Then he has to convince the Gruffalo that he's actually a big scary creature.
It's written by Julia Donaldson who is my absolute favourite children's author right now. I was a nanny for 11 years and I know that anything by Julia Donaldson is going to be a hit. This book has been around so long and is so popular in England that there is actually a lot of merch that you can get to go with it if you choose. There's a movie, an audio book, stuffed animals to represent every character, and even a sequel! The Gruffalo's Child.
This is absolutely one of the best children's books around. I can not recommend this highly enough. Every person that I know/ am related to that is under the age of 10 has received this book from me as a present at some point in their lives. I usually purchase it as a baby shower gift because I want to make sure they have it, either that or for a child I nannied, it would be for the first birthday I celebrated with them.
Kids love this book because of the repetitive rhyming scheme and it's easy to jump in words at the end of sentences for pre-readers. I will never tire of reading this, even over and over. In fact, it's probably been 2 or 3 years since I've read it, and I could absolutely recite it from memory right now. Proudly!
In fact, stop reading this review and buy the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2024This is one of my 4 year old grandsons favorite books. The line the fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good, needed to be elaborated on that it was because fox eat mice. But other than that it flowed well and many opportunities to use different voices when reading. He laughed and wanted it read and re-read over and over. Of the four books I bought this was one of his favorites
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2024my 2 year old granddaughter loves this book! We just got it and I have read it to her ten times or more! She goes home and tells Dada she wants a gruffalo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Intramontabile Gruffalo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super!
Histoire répétitive, qui rime et qui plaît beaucoup à mon bébé de 12 mois. Les images permettent de bien illustrer le vocabulaire, c'est top pour introduire un peu d'anglais dès le plus jeune âge.
