Before this I've been using one of those brush with the boar bristles and the difference between the two is day and night. First off, the one with the 'hair' was great but it leaves a sticky mess where I can't seem to get it cleaned no matter what I do, and within time it starts to fall off as I wash them. Alas, time for me to replace the dreaded mess and the OXO seems to do a fine job - and without the mess. While the silicone bristles are a tad thicker than I'm used to but so far it works for all of my cooking needs. I use it mostly for baking bread and pizza. Spreading olive oil and melted butter with ease and it is very easy to clean. I also like how the brush head is designed at an angle to prevent further mess when setting on a surface. Yes even less messy which I love!

This has got to be one of the best products OXO makes! And must be included as a standard part of any collection of kitchen utensils, because it is equally as important as a spatula and a ladle.

This is not your average paint brush, nor is it the basting brush you'd find attached to a bottle of supermarket BBQ sauce. It is a superior design of carefully constructed parts with specific purposes. This is not merely a pastry brush; it is also a frying pan mop. And distributes any type of butter or oil so well, especially on a non-stick surface, breaking up and spreading out tiny droplets so they don't reconverge.

The angle is such that it is perfectly suited, be it a sloping side, a straight side or a perpendicular side to any cooking surface, including pots, pans, cookie sheets, baking trays, or casserole dishes, whether glass, metal, or otherwise. For instance, buttering and flouring a cake pan used to waste a lot of butter and paper towels and took a lot of time. The first time I used this on a cake pan, I screamed with glee! My wrist felt like it was dancing while I prepared the surface. It took less than half the amount of butter and roughly 30 seconds to go around the entire surface three times to make sure it was thoroughly buttered and then another minute or so to do the flouring. I had so much extra time I didn't know what to do with myself!

Review of OXO Good Grips Silicone Basting & Pastry Brush-Small

We had a good quality / brand basting brush, but we found that the bristles were likely to come out pretty much every time that we used. My wife loves the dishwasher, but *I* am not a big fan and just wash things "old school" when I'm doing stuff. I put the brush into the hot sudsy water, got distracted and it was left to soak in there for almost an hour. When I returned to finish up, the whole bristle pack fell out of the handle and that was that.

My wife definitely wanted another basting brush, but asked that I see what the options are, because picking bristles off our food was not something that she wanted to ever do again.

We have some silicone spatulas, so I thought that this would be worth a shot. This OXO has turned out to be a VERY good choice. For us, the nicest thing is to not have to worry about the bristles, but also, it's easy to hold and use for my wife's small hand and mine and cleans up reasonably well.

The cleaning of it is kind of hard to gauge. We don't use the dishwasher for this, I suspect that you shouldn't and it's not worth it to us to risk the brush by testing it. The silicone has a slightly "slick" feel so after washing you may wonder, is that just the nature of a silicone brush OR did we not get all the butter washed off?

In the end, this is a super nice basting brush and we would buy it again. In fact, we'll probably order the larger brush. I would recommend it to friends.

The coolest thing about this basting brush is that the head of the brush sits at an angle and stays off the counter top! That means the counter top stays clean! This brush is easy to hold, easy to use, and cleans up nicely! I like that this brush is made of silicon so it won't harbor bad bacteria. If you want to use this brush at an outdoor grill, I would recommend getting the longer handle of this brush. The smaller handle of this brush is great for indoor cooking. I highly recommend this basting brush!
