- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2019"I feel like I'm a little girl at a party whose Dad is asking her to leave early. And I'm throwing a fit. I'm not afraid of dying. I just don't want to go." – Kara Tippetts
Kara Tippetts started her "mommy blog" Mundane Faithfulness as a way of encouraging moms to just love their littles and be there every day for them. But the blog became something very different when the young mother of four and pastor's wife was diagnosed with breast cancer.
The blog went viral as Kara, bluntly and beautifully, explained her treatments, shared her doubts, and showed how their family was trying to treasure every moment. In posts that were read by tens of thousands, she explained: "I want to be able to share this story that suffering isn't a mistake, and it isn't the absence of God's goodness...because He's present in pain."
In Psalm 90 the psalmist pleas with the Lord, "teach us to number our days" (Ps. 90:12) and with her diagnosis, Kara was confronted with a truth the rest of us most often evade: that our days are numbered. She showed us what we should all do: find joy in the moments where they can be found. "Cancer was this gift that exposed to us what is important and what is valuable. Parenting with kindness. Loving your husband. Living well."
And then, over the next two years as it became increasingly clear that a cure wasn't likely, Kara showed the world what it looks like to die to God's glory.
I gave this the highest rating I could because everyone should see it. Not only will Kara's story remind us to number our days, she teaches us to think through what our purpose is.
The only caution I would offer is that I can't quite imagine what sort of viewing party would work best, as there are just so many scenes here that will have everyone bawling. It's the mix of brokenness, beauty, truth, and God's goodness that'll ensure no one in the room has a dry eye, so if you don't like bawling in public, you won't want to watch this with friends. But you do want to watch it with friends because it will prompt some fantastic discussions about what really matters. So maybe the best approach is to gather a group, turn the lights down low, distribute Kleenex boxes generously, and know that your tear-stained face won't stand out from anyone else's in the group.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2019I just finished watching Kara Tippets documentary (had been waiting to watch it with Elliot but that hasn't happened yet...but it will!) I think back to that day when I heard her and Jason on the radio on Focus on the Family when I was heading back to work after lunch. I was so taken with their story that I had to listen to the whole broadcast later on the Internet...then had to find her on her blog...then had to join the MFC... To see how one family and their story rippled out to world wide and then how each of us in MFC are rippling out further totally amazes me. God doesn't waste anything in our lives. As long as we are willing to walk through the open doors that are often painful and let Him guide us, we can help our dark world see Him and His love. What a gift!!!!! Anyone who did not know about Kara, Jason and the family should see this and everyone who did know them in some fashion needs to see it. We can see God's gifts of grace in all of it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2019I have been waiting for the release of this video since I heard of the possibility that it was in production.
I have seen it now and I am not disappointed. It is a beautiful film and as someone who did not know Kara personally, this film felt like a gracious gift. What a blessing to see Kara in her environment with her family and friends around her! The film does a great job of sharing her message.... words that encouraged those who heard or read them in her books and blog. Kara is an amazing encourager even now, through her words that will continue to spread her message... that suffering is not the absence of God. That God draws near to those who hurt, and that we should never withhold love.
A wonderful addition is the nearly hour long interviews in the bonus section of the DVD! Each of the three women interviewed are very well known, and their messages further highlighted the beauty of what Kara accomplished in her life and in her dying.
Again, this is a beautiful video and well worth buying.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2019I followed Kara's story for quite some time before her death. There were so many parts of this movie I hadn't seen previously that really made me just, fall in love with her spirit all over again. I stand in awe of a woman who was leaving so much behind, yet found nothing but grace and dignity to do so. Her amazing spirit is so wonderfully captured in this documentary. This movie is a must for anyone with a loved one dying or anyone who is facing their own mortality. I kept questioning, "could I live like this in light of a diagnoses like this?"
I am so blessed to have followed her journey then and to see this film. It makes me cherish my kids a bit more. My life and what I can do with it. I have breath so I need to love and love big! This is a must for women's groups and girlfriends! A ray of sunshiny hope - even when Kara isn't here any more. What a precious woman and what a legacy she left.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2019The documentary of Kara Tippetts who was a blogger and pastor's wife whom I am inspired by. She spoke of loving our children, our husbands, our friends, and doing it well. She was happy with the simple things. She showed a natural hospitality but was not fussy. I followed her the last year of her life on her Mundane Faithfulness blog, and I grew close to and invested in what she shared in her posts. Her focus became laser sharp as she neared the end of her days here. This documentary is about Kara's journey through terminal cancer, and her support system. Variety magazine includes "The Long Goodbye The Kara Tippetts Story" in QUITE an impressive list of “Best Documentaries on Netflix Now”!!
Kara also wrote books, so if you are interested in reading her words, next consider buying one of her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Difficult topic handled with hope
Things that require preparation: college, career, Christmas, weddings, children, vacations, meals… and death. Our society dislikes talking about the statistics around death: one out of ever one people dies. The journey that is life takes us to one day when eyes close for the last time. Are we ready?
We want life with its blessings, joys, exultation. Maybe we leave out "in sickness and in health, until death us do part" from self-composed wedding vows. Do we really believe it is possible to "skip out" of the hard parts of life? … the unexpected, the unpleasant, the unwanted? the lost job, the failed test, the disobedient child, the unpleasant neighbour, the disagreements in relationships, the burnt dinner. As if!
Watch to see how one family handles the arrival of our greatest enemy.
